Hello DHH families and friends!

Middle School has been full of excitement this first semester. We are so happy to welcome 7th grader Timothy to our program as well as Charlie, Immanuel, and Allison who moved up to 7th grade joining Cameron , Kassandra and Hunter in 8th. Our weeks are busy with Yoga, 1:1 pull out services and meetings, weekly SLP activities, bi-weekly Middle School Friendship group with the DHH counselor, our Friday Deaf Power Club, not to mention our school wide gatherings like assemblies and Tribes, but we always make learning together and having fun a priority.

Fall quarter was full of fun hands on science activities while learning about matter and an outdoor bonding field trip.

In Language Arts we studied the foundations of English, story elements such as character, plot and conflict, and learned about the 5 parameters of ASL signs. Both math groups completed an entire work-book and we celebrated with a math party right before winter break. Then, in Social Studies, this is the Ellis Island Immigration year and the students did so well at the simulation the day after Winter Break!

We are looking forward to more fun experiences in second semester, including a fun science unit on Catastrophic Events like earthquakes and volcanoes as well an emphasis on writing both a country report and an Immigration Journal.
Additionally, a particularly significant note to say we are so proud of Cameron who is once again the only DHH student participating in the Madrona Children’s Theater production this year. Please save the date to come support him and our interpreters and see “Shrek! The Musical” on either Thursday, March 17th at 7pm or Saturday, March 19th at 2pm. Keep your eyes peeled for Charlie helping out backstage as well!
It has been a busy year for everyone. A special thank you to the parents who have been able to participate to the community meetings regarding the new Madrona school being built and attend the monthly parent MIT meetings in order to ensure the needs of the DHH program are being met. We are excited about the possibilities with this new venture!

Sincerely,
Hillary, Nick and Lori
