Afterschool Pungmul Program

PRESENTED BY THE EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT

Discover the vibrant rhythms and rich cultural traditions of Korean percussion music through the Edmonds School District's After School Pungmul Program. This dynamic program welcomes students in grades 6-12 with no prior musical experience required – just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn!  Open to students across the district, the group meets twice weekly at Mountlake Terrace High School (4:15 to 5:15 p.m.).

Pungmul is a traditional Korean folk music featuring energetic drumming, colorful costumes, and lively group performances that celebrate community and cultural heritage. Students will learn to play traditional Korean percussion instruments including the janggu (hourglass drum), buk (barrel drum), kkwaenggwari (small gong), and jing (large gong), while also exploring the dance movements and cultural stories that make pungmul such a captivating art form.

Interested in K-Pop, K-Fashion, or K-Cuisine? This hands-on program emphasizes collaboration, rhythm, and cultural appreciation while building confidence through active performance opportunities. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to perform at school assemblies and participate in community festivals and cultural events, sharing the joy and energy of Korean traditional music with audiences across the district and broader community.

Whether you're curious about world music, interested in exploring different cultures, or simply looking for a fun and engaging after-school activity, the Pungmul Program offers an exciting opportunity to be part of something unique while making new friends and learning valuable performance skills. No experience necessary – all skill levels welcome! Join us for an unforgettable musical and cultural journey.
