Select 1 of the 2 options provided below for logging into Canvas for the Edmonds School District.
Option 1: Select Edmonds Bookmarks
In the Chrome Browser on your Chromebook,
- Login to your Chromebook
- Select the Edmonds Bookmarks folder
- Select Canvas link in the Bookmark Menu
Option 2: Edmonds Canvas Website
- Open up an Internet Browser
- Go to edmonds15.instructure.com/login/saml
- Login with your District Google Account and Password

Canvas Dashboard
Go to https://edmonds15.instructure.com/

This section will provide an overview of how to navigate Canvas.
1. Dashboard

The Dashboard is the landing page for Canvas.
-
The Dashboard may look slightly different for each student based on personalized settings.

You will only see courses where you are enrolled in the course and the teacher has published.
2. Canvas Navigation Menu

The Dashboard is the landing page for Canvas.
-
The buttons on the left side of the screen are used to Navigate Canvas outside of the individual courses.

The Dashboard may look slightly different for each student based on personalized settings.
3. Options on the right of the Dashboard screen
To Do: A list of assignments with due dates will show up here. Not all content that you need to access may show up here. Use the To Do list for reminders, but always refer to where the teacher posts assignments in the modules.
Recent Feedback: If a teacher grades or leaves a comment on an assignment, you will see a notification in this section. Click on the title of the assignment to view the feedback.
Note: These options might switch to the bottom of the page if a person is zoomed into the browser.
4. View Grades Button on the Dashboard
The View Grades button will take you directly to a page that will include a list of all the courses that are currently active and show the overall grade for each one if it is available. You can then navigate to the courses from that page.
Accessing a Canvas Course
5. Click on a Course to open
Selecting the course will open the specific Canvas course.
6. Course Home page & Course Navigation Menu
When a course opens, you will see the Home page with information about the course and a course Navigation Menu. To navigate around the course, use any quick links provided on the homepage along with the course navigation menu.
7. Course Home Menu
On the right (or at the bottom of the page if zoomed in), you will see the To Do List for the course, any groups that you have been assigned to in Canvas, and Recent Feedback. You will also view buttons that links you to the Course Stream that shows recent activity, Course Calendar, and Notification Settings for the course.
8. Click on Modules to access assignments, resources, and materials.
9. Courses in the navigation allows you to find a list of current, future, and past courses.
Why might you use this button?

If you are missing a course from your dashboard

If you are personalizing your dashboard to favorite (star) or unfavorite courses.

If you are needing to view course content from a previous term
10. Find the Module
Note: Select the small arrow next to the module name to collapse or show the content connected to the module.
Select Dashboard to return to the main landing page.
Courses
11. Select All Courses
You will see a list of several courses, scroll down and find the link "All Courses"

Courses will be listed by

currently enrolled courses
-
past enrollments
-
future enrollments
Any courses with a filled in star will show on the main Canvas Dashboard. If all courses only include an outline of a star, then all of the courses will show on the Dashboard.

Calendar
14. In the Canvas Navigation, click on Calendar
15. Calendars List
Each of your courses include a Calendar and you have your own personal Canvas calendar.
If the box next to the title is filled with a color, then the calendar is showing. You will only see events or assignments listed on the calendar if there is a specific date listed.
The default view is Month.
Inbox
16. Inbox (Canvas email)
Select the Inbox icon in Canvas to view and send email related to your courses.
If there is a number displaying on the inbox icon, it indicates that you have unread messages.
History
17. Select History Icon
The History icon in the Canvas Navigation is similar to browsing history. It captures which courses and items of been accessed recently.
Help
18. Click on the Help tray icon
The Help button in Canvas will take you to a direct link to the Canvas Guides created for Students by the Edmonds School District Digital Learning and Libraries Department, Canvas Guides from Instructure, and an option to Ask Your Instructor (Teacher) a question about a course.

This will pull up a menu to individual settings for your account.

How do I set my Canvas notifications?
Notifications are an individual user setting in Canvas. These notifications are sent directly to your School District Email account.
Check out the directions below for information on how to manage your personal notification settings.

1. Login to Canvas
2. Click on Account
3. Click on Notifications
4. Select type of notification you want to receive and how often
Click on the icon under the email address to change the notification setting. The options include:

Notify Immediately (Emails sent when the item is updated)

Daily Summary (Emailed around 6pm)
-
Weekly Summary (Emailed Saturdays between 2-4pm)
-
Notifications off (No emails, you must login to Canvas to view the information)
Recommended: Students should set Notify Immediately for Announcements and Conversations (Canvas Inbox).
5. Click on Settings for… to set Course Specific notifications and select the course
You can also access Course Notification settings by selecting View Course Notifications button on the Homepage for the course.
6. Optional: Click on to Enable or Disable Notifications for a specific course.
CAUTION: You may miss important announcements for a course if you choose to Disable notifications for the course or for Canvas.
7. Uncheck Enable Notifications for 2021-2022 Sample Course

How do I set my Pronouns in Canvas?
Include User Pronouns (she/her, he/him, or they/them) in your Profile. If identified, they will show up next to the user name in the following places within Canvas:
- Comment Fields
- Discussions
- Inbox
- People Page (Course and Groups)
- User Navigation Menu
- User Profile Page
- User Settings Page

How to Enable Pronouns
This is an individual account setting that is optional for each user.
1. Login to Canvas
2. Select Account Icon in the Navigation
3. Select Settings
4. Select Edit Settings
This button is located on the right side of the Settings page. (If the page is zoomed in, the button may be at the bottom of the page)
5. Select the Pronoun from the dropdown menu
- Select the arrow next to Pronouns to view the dropdown menu.
- Select the Pronouns for your account from the list
6. Select Update Settings

How do I set my Profile Picture in Canvas?
If you choose to set a profile image, it needs to be school appropriate. Your profile image is seen by all staff, your family, and other students.

1. Login to Canvas
2. Click on Account Icon in the Canvas Navigation Menu
3. Click on Profile
4. Click on User Profile Icon
A pencil will display as you move the mouse over the icon.
5. Click on Upload a Picture or Take a Picture
Options:

Upload a picture will allow you to select an image that is saved on your computer or Google Drive.
-
Take a picture will allow you to take a photo using the webcam on the computer.
Continue to see the specific directions for each option listed above.
OPTION 1: Upload a Picture
A. Click on choose a picture
Select "choose a picture", locate the image in your Drive, and select to upload
B. Crop the image if needed
C. Click on Save
Option 2: Take a Picture Option
A. Click on Take a Picture
B. Click on the image box
You may be prompted in the Chrome Browser to allow the site access to your camera. You will need to allow the camera in order to take the photo.
C. Click on Take Picture

Personalize Canvas Dashboard for Students

Canvas Dashboard Personalization
Go to https://edmonds15.instructure.com/
Login with your District Google Account
1. Personalize the Dashboard: The Landing page for Canvas
2. Click on Dashboard Options to personalize dashboard view.
3. Set Dashboard View
Options:
-
Card View: The card view includes the tiles of each course. (Default Setting) - All user directions will start with this view.

List View: To Do List view. Items displayed based on date, course, due date, and due time. (Caution: Relying only on this view there is a potential of missing important content posted in a course)

Recent Activity: A list of recent activity for all courses. (Caution: Relying only on this view there is a potential of missing important content posted in a course).

Color Overlay: Removes or Adds a colored tint to the course tiles. Unchecking it makes the course card images show clearer.
4. Course Tile Settings: Select on the more options menu
Each course tile includes 3 vertical dots that include a more options menu with 2 tabs:

Color

Change the color of the course tile

Add a course nickname
5. Color Tab: Type in Course Nickname and select a color
Setting a course nickname is optional. The course nickname is to help you identify the course quickly on your Dashboard. For example, typing in 1st Period or the Teacher's name.
Selecting a color for the tile is optional as well.

Changing the color, will change the font color for the course title, the tile color, and overlay color.
6. Click on Apply to change your settings

Change location of the tile on the dashboard

Unfavorite, favorited courses
7. Select the Move Tab
8. Select Move direction
Choose to Move the course tile

to the top of the dashboard or bottom

up or down, which will place move it one row up or down.

If a course is favorited, you will see an option to unfavorite the course.
Note: You can also click and drag the tiles on the Dashboard to move them.
Favorite Courses or Add Courses to Dashboard
If you are not seeing a course on your Dashboard, follow the next set of directions.
9. Click on Courses
10. Click on All Courses
11. Click on the star next to the course titles you want to show on the Dashboard.
Note: If any of the courses are starred with a colored star, only those courses will show on the dashboard. You are still in the class even if you do not star the class.

Grading & Feedback
How to View Grades & Feedback in Canvas

Follow the steps for an overview on how to view your grades and feedback from your teachers in your Canvas courses.

1. Open Canvas Course
2. Click on Grades in the course navigation
The number next to Grades indicates if there is new feedback or a grade attached to an assignment.
Viewing Types of Feedback
From the Grades Page in Canvas you can access the following types of feedback:

Comment Feedback

Turnitin Feedback

Rubric Feedback

Submission Details Page: Comments and On Document Annotations and Feedback
3. Comment Feedback: Select View Comments
If there is a speech bubble next to the assignment title on the grades page, it indicates there is a comment posted. Comments can be posted prior to the assignment being submitted and after they are submitted.
4. View Feedback Comments, then select Close.
5. Turnitin Feedback: Click on Colored Flag
If there is a Similarity Score Flag next to the assignment number, click on it to view the Turnitin Feedback and similarity rating. These flags may be blue, green, yellow, red, or possibly gray. (View the section about Turnitin for more information).
6. Rubric Results: Select the clipboard icon to see rubric results
Only assignments that included a rubric that was built in Canvas will include the option to view rubric results.
Selecting the clipboard will open the rubric directly underneath the assignment.
7. View Rubric feedback and then select Close Rubric
8. Assignment Feedback: Select Assignment Title on the Grades Page
9. Assignment Submission Details: View Teacher or Peer Review Comments and Add Comment to the teacher.
10. On Document Feedback: Select Assignment Title
11. Select the link for the submission file
The links may look different depending on the submission type, but the link will be in the same spot on the Submission Details page.
