World Languages
Welcome to the World Languages Department of the Edmonds School District!
Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are linguistically and culturally equipped to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language, modern or classical. Children who come to school from non-English backgrounds should also have opportunities to develop further proficiencies in their first language.
- American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages
A study of current research shows that the study of World Languages at an early age promotes:
- an understanding of the cultural diversity of the world and of our nation.
- opportunities for students to grow their interpersonal, interpretive, presentational, and higher-order thinking skills.
- students' intellectual development and preparation for college and career.
The Edmonds School District’s World Languages courses use the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language’s (ACTFL) standards as the basis for their instruction. They are also aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
These programs use both textbook-based and online opportunities for students to speak, listen, read, and write as they are learning the language. (World Language Adoption Recommendations
