Welcome to the Edmonds School District Music Department
“My wish for music education is that every child on the planet would have the opportunity to be involved in the joy of music-making in some fashion.” Bob McGrath, Sesame Street
The Edmonds School District has been recognized thirteen times since 2005 as one of the Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America. This recognition is due to a strong commitment by the district and community to support the study of music as an essential component in a well-rounded education. It is also a reflection of the outstanding music educators and talented students that make up our district. As a program, we are committed to providing high-quality music education opportunities for all students as part of their core academic instruction.
All elementary students have general music classes that are taught by music specialists in grades K-6. Additionally, all elementary students also have the opportunity to participate in performing groups (band, orchestra, choir) beginning in the 5th grade. Our secondary schools offer a full complement of musical offerings that challenge students to excel in their areas of focus. These concert and jazz performing groups consistently received superior ratings at regional, state and national festivals. Additionally, the Edmonds School District is a strong partner with the Washington Music Educators Association, providing students the opportunity to audition for and participate in All-State and All-Northwest honor groups.
The study of music prepares students for success in life. In addition to the aesthetic enrichment inherent in studying and performing music, music education helps prepare students by enriching essential 21st Century learning skills. Creativity, Innovation, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, and Global Awareness are all addressed and enhanced in our music classrooms.
“Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul” Plato
Welcome to the Edmonds music community where educators, students, and community members are all joining together to add value and meaning to our future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
