Social Studies
In elementary Social Studies instruction, our teachers follow the Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), which focuses on Civics, Economics, Geography, History, and Social Studies Skills. With Civics education in mind, an important goal of our District is to provide students with the skills and understandings they need to become effective and responsible participants in our democratic society. As citizens of a culturally diverse and increasingly interdependent world, our students are guided toward developing the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions with regard to the needs of regional, national, and global communities.
All elementary schools teach the John McCoy (lulilaš) Since Time Immemorial curriculum. Through these lessons, students learn that it is part of our collective responsibility to honor the First Peoples of this land and to ensure all students learn the true and living histories of Washington's tribal nations. These lessons reflect our commitment to educating the students in our district about tribal history, culture, treaty rights, the contributions of Native American Peoples, and the relationship between contemporary tribal and state government institutions.
