The New Middle School replacement project is currently in the schematic design phase. Over the ‘24-’25 school year, we held six meetings with the Design Review Committee (DRC). We have also held three meetings with the District Steering Committee and a Neighborhood Open House on April 2nd.

The feedback from these early phases has been combined with exploratory work from our architectural, engineering, and GC/CM teams to develop an overall site layout (below). As always, all design is schematic and subject to change through future phases and jurisdictional input. Over the next phase we will continue to develop these designs and explore them in more detail. The design of our new schools always centered around maximizing educational outcomes for our students. We aim to create robust facilities which add value to their communities.

Over the next two years, we will continue refining the design and navigating the permitting process, with construction expected to begin in the summer of 2026. We anticipate welcoming students to the new school in the 2028-2029 academic year. Thank you for your involvement and support as we move forward with this important project!

The replacement projects for College Place Elementary and College Place Middle School have successfully transitioned from the schematic design phase into design development—a critical stage where refinements, adjustments, and additional details take shape.

Over the past year, we have actively engaged with the community through eight Design Review Committee (DRC) meetings, two community meetings, and valuable feedback sessions with focus groups and the Steering Committee. These collaborative efforts have played a key role in updating the Educational Specifications and shaping the future design of both schools.

As the project progresses, we continue working closely with the City of Lynnwood and our committees. We also invite families, staff, and community members to join us for a third community meeting to hear the latest project updates and ask questions.

Looking ahead, design refinements will continue over the next two years as we navigate the permitting process. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with the new schools expected to open for students in the 2028-2029 academic year.

These projects are funded by the voter-approved 2024 Capital Construction Bond. By law, bond funds cannot be used for day-to-day operating costs of schools or the school district. Instead, they are designated for major construction projects like these to improve learning environments for students and staff.

The first phase of the Mountlake Terrace Highschool HVAC project completed this September with functional replacement of the boilers, domestic hot water systems and associated pumps. The district is entering negotiations to establish a guaranteed maximum price with the progressive design builder, Hermanson Company, for Installation of new supply, return and exhaust fans, chilled water and associated ductwork. Work for the airside and chillers would proceed immediately, with non disruptive scopes all school year and finishing in August 2025.

The new Middle School, located at the site of the Former Alderwood Middle School, will be the district's 5th middle school and will provide the necessary space to transition the 6th grade into middle schools district-wide. The project has just completed procurement steps and assembled a team which lead its design and construction. Mahlum Architects was selected to lead the design and Spee West Construction won the award for General Contractor Construction Manager (GC/CM) pending board approval. The project is currently in an outreach step to gather members for the Design Review Committee (DRC) as well as special input sessions. As this is a new facility, without an existing staff or student body, we are focused on creating a strong team to represent the student, staff, and community voice, as the end users of the facility. If you would like to participate in the planning process, please contact Will Thomsen at thomsenw@edmonds.wednet.edu.

The College Place Elementary and College Place Middle School replacement project is currently in the schematic design phase. Last school year, we held six meetings with the Design Review Committee (DRC) and organized tours to nearby schools and recently constructed facilities within the Edmonds School District. Our first community meeting allowed us to engage with focus groups to gather valuable feedback for updating the Educational Specifications for both schools. Over the summer, we convened with the Steering Committee for two productive sessions.

This new school year began with a DRC meeting, where we presented the initial design, including site and building layout. The Steering Committee has provided direction at key stages of the design. We are also engaging with staff from College Place Middle and Elementary, as well as PTA and PSO groups from the feeder elementary schools. We invite you to our second community meeting on October 16th, from 6 to 7 PM, in the College Place Middle School commons. This meeting will include School District personnel, the design team, architects, traffic engineers, and other specialized consultants.

We are committed to ongoing engagement between the Edmonds School District and the community throughout this process. To stay updated, please visit the Capital Projects website regularly, where we will post project updates.

Construction of the Oak Heights Elementary School Replacement has officially begun!

Over the summer, the school transitioned to the Former Alderwood Middle School, where it will remain for the next two years while the new facility takes shape. The construction site is alive with activity, as large machinery moves about, demolishing the old structure and grading for the new learning environment. Workers are making swift progress, with the foundations starting to take form.

We excitedly anticipate welcoming students to the brand-new Oak Heights Elementary in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Various efforts are underway to reduce the district's overall energy consumption and to comply with the clean buildings act. HVAC scheduling has been adjusted district wide, especially off the heels of changes made during Covid to reduce unnecessary runtime of equipment. Aging boiler infrastructure is being replaced with new high efficiency and reliable models, this effort is starting at our older single boiler elementary schools Sherwood Elementary, Edmonds Elementary among others. LED replacements are underway at Lynnwood High and Edmond Woodway High and will be followed by our other secondary sites. We are also in the process of performing Ashrae II Audits at our largest sites which will identify further energy efficiency measures (EEM’s) which we will begin to execute as soon as funding is available.
