Westgate Elementary School Project Updates
The design team has reached the Schematic Design milestone for Westgate Elementary School. The team is currently performing a detailed cost estimate and cost reconciliation to evaluate the design against the project budget and identify opportunities for refinement as the project moves forward.
The project team will meet with the City of Edmonds for an initial review of the design. Early in the school year, the team is scheduled to meet the school’s Design Review Committee, staff, and community and with the Steering Committee, to provide project updates and gather feedback as the design progresses.
On August 27, Westgate Elementary School staff were invited to tour Oak Heights Elementary and Meadowdale Elementary. Some staff members were able to participate and gain insight from the completed schools, including opportunities to see spaces, furniture, and features firsthand and consider how those lessons may inform the Westgate design.
The Westgate Elementary replacement project is currently in the Schematic Design phase. The team has been working with the City of Edmonds to establish permitting timelines and other AHJ requirements.
The project team remains committed to ensuring that the needs of Westgate Elementary students and staff are at the center of the design process. These perspectives help inform the project while honoring both the school's history and its future.
The project team recently held its first Steering Committee meeting, bringing together cabinet-level leadership to review and provide input on the project. District departments, the School Board, and agencies having jurisdiction (AHJs), including the City of Edmonds and Olympic View Water District, have also been providing input and this will continue throughout the project. As with any major capital project, many stakeholders contribute to shaping the final outcome.
In addition to the Design Review Committee (DRC) 6 meetings held thus far, the project team will continue to engage students, staff, families, and the broader community through surveys, small-group discussions, staff meeting presentations, student activities, community events, and informal opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback. The DRC will take a break over the summer while the design team continues advancing the schematic design based on feedback received to date. The DRC will reconvene in the new school year to review progress, provide additional input, and continue to help shape the project.
