Mountlake Terrace Elementary School
Project Description
Edmonds School District replaced the existing 1955 Mountlake Terrace Elementary, thanks to a 2014 voter-approved Capital Construction Bond, additional revenue from the sale and/or lease of District property and approval from the School Board. The new school was constructed on the original Mountlake Terrace Elementary site and replaced the previous building. This project ran in conjunction with the Lynnwood Elementary School replacement.
The previous Mountlake Terrace Elementary School buildings were physically worn-out and no longer functional or conducive to our current educational model. In January 2016 the School Board approved replacement of the school. This decision was made with careful consideration of the schools physical condition, capacity issues, safety, and inadequacies of current facility to the educational program. Replacing Mountlake Terrace Elementary is the best value with taxpayer dollars to achieve a functional and educationally appropriate school.
The Mountlake Terrace Elementary School design concept, budget and schedule are based on the District’s Educational Specification, along with the Lynndale Elementary School project. The new facility is approximately 62,500 square feet with a two story main classroom building and a one story Gymnasium and Commons. The project includes new playground and equipment, site improvements of existing grass play field, parking, bus and auto circulation, emergency vehicle access, neighborhood pedestrian connections, security and safety, and new storm water management facilities.
The Total Project Budget was $38,500,000 and construction commenced during spring/summer of 2017. The school transitioned to the former Woodway Elementary School, which was their temporary location for the 2017-18 school year while the new Lynnwood Elementary was under construction. The District completed construction in time to open the new school for students in September 2018.
