Madrona K-8 school building closed

Posted on 10/18/2021

The below message was sent to the Madrona K-8 community from Superintendent Dr. Balderas:

Dear Madrona families,

In consultation with the Snohomish Health District regarding the spread of COVID-19 cases at Madrona K-8, the Edmonds School District will close the school building starting tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021. The school building will reopen on Monday, Nov. 1.

There will be NO SCHOOL Tuesday, Oct. 19, for all grades at Madrona K-8 while staff work to prepare for remote learning to begin Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Learning plan while school is closed

Tuesday, Oct. 19:

  • No school for all students at Madrona K-8

  • Staff will use this day to prepare for remote learning (this is per the MOU with the Edmonds Education Association)

  • The district will conduct a deep cleaning of the entire building

Wednesday, Oct. 20-Friday, Oct. 29:

  • Remote learning for all grades 9:20 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.

  • Your student’s teachers will reach out to you about specifics for live learning via Zoom and independent learning

Why is Madrona K-8 closing?

In the last ten days, there were 26 COVID-19 cases at Madrona K-8. Of the 591 enrolled students, 236 are at home because of classroom closures. Of those students, 135 are quarantined as they were direct close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The Snohomish Health District recommends and supports the decision to close the school until Nov. 1 to help stop the transmission of COVID-19. This aligns with the latest guidance from the Washington State Department of Health.

Close contacts need to quarantine until instructed, and should not go to other activities or child care.

Students and staff not notified as a close contact do not need to quarantine, but should seek testing and monitor for symptoms.

We appreciate your understanding as we do everything we can when it comes to the health and safety of our students and staff.
