Each month, our high school programs select students to be recognized for their accomplishments and achievements. The photos and names of the June students are included below.

Edmonds-Woodway High

Clubs & Activities: Pianist – private piano lessons. Level 9 Piano First Class Honors and Level 10 Piano in The RCM Development Program; 2017 Bach Festival (SIPF) Silver Medalist; Actor in Edmonds-Woodway High School’s Play Production. I was selected by the director through an audition. I joined my senior year. We made four plays each school year. I played “Olga Stiggler” (one of the main characters) in the winter comedy “The Whole Darn Shooting Match.” (I’ve been doing plays and musicals since fifth grade.); tutored high school students one-on-one for their writing, mainly for English and History; Edmonds-Woodway High School Chinese Club President. I planned and lead all cultural events, i.e. dining experiences & art classes (invited professional art teachers); I tutored Mandarin students; Chinese souvenir sale (Club fundraiser), I sold items from China, took photos of the items & put them into an advertisement / catalogue; invited Northwest Wushu martial arts teacher & her students’ performance. Chinese Club Tapioca Express Fundraiser – sold Bubble tea at school. I developed business skills. Communicated w/ tapioca express boss, wrote fundraiser proposal, negotiated pricing, hosted a Chinese New Year celebration at Edmonds Library (taught kids about traditions & crafts, i.e. paper lanterns & paper cut art); hosted a Sichuan Opera Night at EW theater; I invited a professional Sichuan opera performer, Long Yu, who is the only female inheritor of the face mask changing art at the National Level.

Athletics: Varsity Tennis – sophomore & senior year. I take private and group tennis lessons at Harbor Square Athletic Club.

Honors: Full-IB diploma candidate; National Honor Society (joined sophomore year – 2016); The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) – joined Aug 2017; Seal of Biliteracy – reached a high level of proficiency in an additional language – Chinese Mandarin. I was the only EW junior to take an IB Mandarin Exam in 2017; only EW student to take IB Mandarin SL exam at EWHS in 2017. I earned a 7. (Earned 91 out of 100)

Awards: Honorable Mention in the 2016 Washington State Chinese Competition for Chinese Singing (G9-12); 2017 Bach Festival (SIPF) Silver Medalist; Level 9 Piano First Class Honors and Level 10 Piano in The RCM Development Program (national program); Selected author in Accomplished 2016 Poetry Collection – The America Library of Poetry www.libraryofpoetry.com

Community Service: Sno-Isle Libraries Teen Ambassador I volunteered at the library and completed online assignments, i.e. social media marketing. I helped children complete crafts. I created a library bulletin board for the Edmonds Library. I also play piano for my church congregation every Sunday, plan fun weekend events for youth group and practiced piano and vocals for my youth group’s events.

Significant School Project: I wrote a nearly 4,000-word extended essay for Full-IB, regarding how former President Barack Obama expresses his attitudes towards race in America in his speeches, “2004 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address,” “Remarks by the President at the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Marches,” and “Remarks by the President in Eulogy for the Honorable Reverend Clementa Pinckney.” Through research and careful analysis of Obama’s speeches, I came to better understand America’s difficult legacy of race, and the power of words to bring hope and healing. I believe that Obama’s message on race – that we, Americans, should continue to fight for improved race relations and equality – is becoming increasingly urgent in today’s ugly politics on race.

Future Educational Goals: I will be attending the University of Washington, Seattle in Fall 2018.

Athletics: Four years varsity wrestling

Honors: Full International Baccalaureate diploma candidate, four time district placer in wrestling, seventh in state in 3A Mat Classic XXIX, wrestling Academic State Champion, Senior Academic Athlete, Edmonds-Woodway Athlete of the Week

Community Service: Volunteered for four years at College Place Middle School with their wrestling program, with Key Club at various community events (i.e. Spooky Street), and with Science Club at Terrace Park Elementary.

Future Educational Goals: To attend the University of Washington next fall. I’ve also been accepted into the engineering program as an undeclared major. I plan to study computer engineering or electrical engineering.

Future Career Goals: I plan on becoming an engineer with the focus of innovation to improve daily life, whether it be virtual and software related or physical and revolve around technology.

Anything else we should know? My IB extended essay was on analyzing the effects of temperature on different battery types and their resistivity which has helped develop and shape my passions and educational goals.
