Hazelwood Elementary, which was built and opened in the fall of 1967, celebrated its 50th birthday Nov. 2 with food, entertainment and the sharing of memories.

The night kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by current Hazelwood Student Council members. Principal Tim Parnell, Master of Ceremonies, welcomed the crowd. Mountlake Terrace High School’s choir, The Dynamics, sang several songs under the direction of T.J. Sullivan. Hazelwood’s music teacher, Sarah Moyer, led the singing of a new “Hazelwood Way” song, which was followed by a robust round of “Happy Birthday.”

Among the current staff, students and parents, some of the original 1967 staff and student body were present, as well as a large number of alumni students and staff. One young couple, who had the same first-grade teacher at Hazelwood, announced that they were now engaged to be married. Jan Link, retired Hazelwood principal, shared how special the school was in her life and in the community. A special tour of the campus was conducted to conclude the festive evening.
