A message on state guidelines for reopening schools

Dear Edmonds School District families,

 

As we plan for reopening our school buildings in the fall, we want you to know that the health and safety of our students, families, staff, and community members surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic comes first.

 

This morning, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) released state guidelines on how schools will reopen this fall. You can read the entire document on the OSPI website. The district is committed to exploring the viability of this reopening plan for in-person instruction. 

 

We want you to know as Dr. Kristine McDuffy steps down from her position at the end of the month, she and our new superintendent, Dr. Gustavo Balderas, are working together with the district leadership to use the new state guidelines to help make specific plans for different school scenarios when we reopen in September.

 

Our Commitment
We are committed to doing whatever it takes to protect our community’s health and ensure that every child can achieve to their highest level. We are committed to working with our schools, educators, families, and community partners to provide equitable support for every student’s success, with proven and responsive solutions during this unprecedented time. 

 

How decisions will be made
We have a diverse group of educators who will be working to make the best decisions we can for our students, families and staff. The School Board will also play a critical role in approving any plans as we move into the 2020-21 school year.

 

Our COVID-19 Emergency Response team includes representation from the following: Superintendent, Cabinet, Technology, Student Health Services, Human Resources, Student Learning, Student Services, Business & Finance, Communications & Public Relations, Food & Nutrition Services, Facilities Operations, Diversity, Equity & Outreach, and the District Safety Officer. This team has met regularly since March 2020 and will continue to meet and make operational and logistical decisions for the district.

 

We also have the Continuous Learning Task Force that has been working to provide educational resources and support as we moved to a distance learning model this spring. This group has continued to meet during the closure and will now be working to plan for the different learning scenarios that could be in place for the start of school in the fall. 

 

Back to the classroom

We all want students back in the classroom. In-person relationships with teachers and friends is important for student success, which is why our primary goal is to bring students back to school, but with recommended measures in place to protect the health and safety of our students and staff.

 

School will look different 

School will look different than it did before the pandemic. We will all need to adjust to the way school will work in the fall so that we can protect health and safety, while also providing the best possible environment for teaching and learning. This means that some of the following measures will likely need to be in place:

  • Adjustments to classrooms and schedules with changes to accommodate social distancing.

  • Students and staff will be asked to wear face coverings.

  • We will expect students to stay home at the first sign of any symptoms, including cough, fever, or shortness of breath.

 

Preparing for several different scenarios

  • Schools operating on split or rotating schedules, along with continuous remote learning.

  • Phased-in reopening of schools with continuous remote learning.

  • Continuous Learning 2.0 (similar to the remote learning in the spring of 2020, but with significant improvements).

 

While we want students back in the classroom, we need to be prepared in the event that we have to use a distance learning model again if our public health partners find a resurgence of infections. We will work with families and communities to ensure an equitable approach to remote learning and respond to students’ needs. We’ve learned a lot about how to deliver remote learning well, and we’ll continue to adjust and improve moving forward. 

 

We know that remote learning raises questions for childcare and food security, and we will have plans in place to address those needs.

 

Hearing from our community
Earlier this week, the district sent out a Continuous Learning Survey to all 3rd-12th grade students, as well families and teachers. Your voice and input is critical for us and we will use this data in our future planning. For those families who have not yet taken the survey, we ask that you do so by Tuesday, June 16, 2020.

 

We will continue to update you
We expect that our back-to-school planning efforts will be ongoing throughout the summer and our plans and strategies may need to be adjusted and refined as we approach the start of the new school year. Clear and transparent decision-making is a priority for us, and we will provide regular updates to make sure you have the latest information.

Estimadas familias del Distrito Escolar de Edmonds:

 

Mientras planeamos para reabrir nuestros edificios escolares en el otoño, queremos que sepan que la salud y la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, familias, personal y miembros de la comunidad en esta pandemia de COVID-19 es la prioridad.

 

Esta mañana, la Oficina del Superintendente de Instrucción Pública (OSPI) publicó pautas estatales sobre cómo las escuelas volverán a abrir este otoño. Puede leer el documento completo en la página web de OSPI. El distrito se compromete a explorar la viabilidad de este plan de reapertura para la instrucción en persona.

 

Queremos que sepa que aunque la Dra. Kristine McDuffy deja su cargo a fin de mes, ella y nuestro nuevo superintendente, el Dr. Gustavo Balderas, están trabajando junto con los líderes del distrito para utilizar las nuevas pautas estatales para ayudar a concretar planes para diferentes escenarios escolares cuando volvamos a abrir en septiembre.

 

Nuestro compromiso

Estamos comprometidos a hacer lo que sea necesario para proteger la salud de nuestra comunidad y garantizar que cada estudiante pueda alcanzar su máximo nivel. Estamos comprometidos a trabajar con nuestras escuelas, educadores, familias y socios de la comunidad para brindar un apoyo equitativo para el éxito de cada estudiante, con soluciones comprobadas y receptivas durante este tiempo sin precedentes.

 

Cómo se tomarán las decisiones

Tenemos un extenso grupo de líderes que trabajarán para tomar las mejores decisiones que podamos para nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal. La Mesa Directiva del distrito tendrá una parte fundamental en la aprobación de cualquier plan a medida que avanzamos en el año escolar de 2020-21.

 

Nuestro equipo de respuesta ante emergencias COVID-19 incluye representación de los siguientes: Superintendente, Gabinete, Tecnología, Servicios de Salud Estudiantil, Recursos Humanos, Aprendizaje Estudiantil, Servicios Estudiantiles, Negocios y finanzas, Comunicaciones y relaciones públicas, Servicios de alimentación y nutrición, Operaciones de instalaciones, Diversidad , Equidad y Alcance,(DEO) y el Oficial de Seguridad del Distrito. Este equipo se ha reunido regularmente desde marzo de 2020 y continuará reuniéndose y tomando decisiones operativas y logísticas para el distrito.

 

También contamos con el comite de Aprendizaje Continuo que ha estado trabajando para proporcionar recursos educativos y apoyo a medida que avanzamos hacia un modelo de aprendizaje a distancia en casa esta primavera. Este grupo ha seguido reuniéndose mientras que las escuelas están cerradas y ahora continuarán trabajando para planificar los diferentes escenarios de aprendizaje que podrían estar disponibles para el comienzo de la escuela en el otoño.

 

De vuelta al aula

Todos queremos que los estudiantes vuelvan a las aulas. Las relaciones en persona con maestros y amigos son importantes para el éxito de los estudiantes, por lo que nuestro objetivo principal es traer a los estudiantes de regreso a la escuela, pero con las medidas recomendadas para proteger la salud y la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y el personal.

 

La escuela se verá diferente

La escuela se verá diferente de lo que era antes de la pandemia. Todos tendremos que adaptarnos a la forma en que funcionará la escuela en el otoño para que podamos proteger la salud y la seguridad, al tiempo que proporcionamos el mejor entorno posible para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje. Esto puede significar que algunas de las siguientes medidas deberán implementarse:

  • Ajustes a las aulas y horarios con cambios para acomodar el distanciamiento social.

  • Se les pedirá a los estudiantes y al personal que se cubran la cara.

  • Esperaremos que los estudiantes se queden en casa a la primera señal de cualquier síntoma, incluyendo tos, fiebre y falta de aliento.

 

Preparación para varios escenarios diferentes.

  • Las escuelas que operan en horarios divididos o rotativos junto con aprendizaje desde casa.

  • Abriendo por partes con aprendizaje desde casa.

  • Una diferente versión de aprendizaje desde casa (similar al aprendizaje desde casa en la primavera de 2020, pero mejor).

 

Aunque deseamos que los estudiantes regresen a las aulas, debemos estar preparados en caso de que tengamos que usar un modelo de aprendizaje desde casa nuevamente si nuestros socios de salud pública encuentran un resurgimiento de infecciones. Trabajaremos con las familias y comunidades para garantizar un enfoque equitativo del aprendizaje desde casa y responder a las necesidades de los estudiantes. Hemos aprendido mucho sobre cómo ofrecer un aprendizaje desde de casa y continuaremos ajustando y mejorando en el futuro.

 

Sabemos que el aprendizaje de casa plantea preguntas para el cuidado de los niños y la seguridad alimentaria, y tendremos un plan para resolver estas necesidades.

 

Escuchando de nuestra comunidad

A principios de esta semana, el distrito envió una Encuesta de Aprendizaje desde casa a todos los estudiantes de 3 ° a 12 ° grado, así como a las familias y los maestros. La opinión de las familias y la comunidad son fundamentales para nosotros y utilizaremos estos datos en nuestra planificación para el futuro. Para aquellas familias que aún no han respondido la encuesta, le pedimos que lo haga antes del martes 16 de junio de 2020.

 

Seguiremos enviando información

Esperamos que nuestros esfuerzos de planificación para el regreso a la escuela continúen durante todo el verano y que nuestros planes y estrategias deban ajustarse y perfeccionarse a medida que nos acercamos al comienzo del nuevo año escolar. Tomar decisiones claras y transparentes es una prioridad para nosotros, y les informaremos periódicamente para asegurarnos de que tengan la información más reciente.
