Vaccine clinics for students 12+
Coming in June to Mountlake Terrace and Meadowdale high schools: Drive-through COVID-19 vaccine clinics for students 12+ and their families. We have partnered with Seattle Visiting Nurses to provide this service to our school community. Look for sign-up information soon!

Spruce Elementary construction update
The design is done, plans are made, permits in hand, and it won’t be long before Phase 2 of Spruce Elementary construction begins this summer!
Phase 2 includes 28 classrooms, a beautiful light-filled library, and more.
Phase 1, completed two years ago, includes the new gym, cafe, kitchen, and future space for administration.
While Spruce Phase 2 is under construction, students will spend the 2021-22 school year at the Former Alderwood Middle School.

Graduation updated information
In order to provide in-person graduation ceremonies at our stadium, tickets are limited this year. In addition, all graduations will be streamed for those who cannot attend in person.
A few of our high schools have also adjusted dates, so please check our updated schedule below.

Chromebooks and hotspots for summer
Students returning in the fall can keep their Chromebooks and hotspots over the summer break. If your student will be graduating or leaving the district, your school will make a plan to collect the equipment at the end of the year.
Looking to the start of next school year, we will issue new Chromebooks to incoming 9th, 5th, and 1st graders for the 2021-22 school year.
Schools will schedule drive-through swap events for students in these grade levels prior to the start of the school year, likely in August.

Principal hiring process update – Madrona and Sherwood
The district is in the process of hiring new principals for Madrona K-8 and Sherwood Elementary. School staff and families of those schools received a survey to fill out and share their input in qualities they hope for in their next leader.
There are also webinars scheduled for this week, one for each school community, to learn about the hiring process, ask questions and provide input. Please visit the District Calendar for webinar details.

Alumni Spotlight – 2004 Mountlake Terrace High graduate Lily Gladstone
Lily Gladstone, 2004 graduate from Mountlake Terrace High school, is a successful actress. She is set to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in a Martin Scorsese directed film called Killers of the Flower Moon.

Fall sports athletes selected to all-league teams
Student athletes earned top WESCO Athletics league honors for their performance during the abbreviated fall sports season that lasted from late February to late March.
More than 80 district athletes competing in swimming, girls soccer, volleyball, cross country and football were selected.

High school robotics teams win several awards
Our Lynnwood High School and Edmonds Heights K-12 robotics teams earned some top awards in state and international competition recently.
Lynnwood High’s FIRST Robotics Team earned the “Designer’s Award” in May for its environmental-themed “Project Polar” game that students created working remotely.
The Edmonds Heights K-12 3805 Atomic Robotics team wrapped up its 2021 season two weeks ago by winning four awards at the Curie Interleague in late April:

American Sign Language students express voice through art
In the first district American Sign Language High School Art Competition and awards ceremony, ASL students from Edmonds-Woodway, Lynwood, Mountlake Terrace high schools and Edmonds Heights K-12 submitted deaf and hard of hearing themed art and writing. Care Solace – helping our families connect with mental health services
As we approach summer, we hope your family is able to take a true break and rest, restore, and safely connect with your loved ones. We want to remind you of the resources available in our community over the summer.
In our commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of our students, parents and staff, we are partnering with Care Solace to provide mental health and substance abuse help. The service is confidential and offers help finding a provider around-the-clock.

May Rotary Educators of the Month
Every month, a group of schools select a staff member as Educator of the Month. The Rotary then holds an awards ceremony to present awardees with a certificate and gift certificate. The following school staff were honored in May as Rotary Club of Alderwood-Terrace Educators of the Month:
Chase Lake Community School
Anndrea Fernandez, Student Intervention Coordinator
“Mrs. Fernandez is exceptionally creative in how she supports students, staff, and families,” said principal Sean Silver. “She is masterful at making people feel seen and cared for. Mrs. Fernandez always keeps students at the heart of the work and she is deeply committed to the success of every stakeholder at Chase Lake. Our school is inherently better because of the work of Mrs. Fernandez.”
College Place Elementary
Lisa DeVries, Paraeducator
“She is a para educator that goes Way above and beyond to meet the needs of students and families,” said principal Stacy Crum. “She is a force of positivity. She listens and connects with our neediest students. She is constantly thinking of ways we can better serve our students and families. This year she has taken on the responsibility of running our distribution center. She labeled a backpack for every student, and helps load material and distribute the materials to families every other week. She has done this while also serving her SPED students, and doing all her other functions. She has been integral in maintaining the CPE garden, and last Spring harvested the food and distributed it to our needy families. Additionally, our student council made blankets for the homeless and she connected with the local food bank to ensure they reached those that needed them most. She is in charge of our safety committee and worked tirelessly to ensure we maintained COVID protocols and got students back safely. Additionally, she helps plan and run all of our drills. Lisa is kind, hare-working, innovative and makes a difference in the lives of students and families.
Cedar Valley Community School
Developmental kindergarten teacher Jillian Whitney
“Jillian returned with students at the beginning of the year in January,” principal Leah Bracken said. “She has consistently been an anchor for our CVE families not only as they navigate the school system as newly attending kindergarteners, but also as they understand the ins and outs of the Special education processes too. Jillian challenges the educational status quo and is using this unprecedented time to implement innovative learning supports to both her in person classroom and technology resources. She is a true advocate for students' and families' equitable access for success in learning.

“Both of them have been an amazing team to work with because of their focus on students and families,” said principal Christi Kessler. “I am so proud of the daily work they do with children and families and their dedication to our staff, families and community at Sherwood.
Ana has done amazing work over the years in supporting students’ social emotional growth, through teaching self regulation skills, self awareness and safety skills, but most importantly, taking the time to work with students to solve problems. Ana believes in empowering students to recognize their emotions, take actions to help themselves become more self-aware and make choices that help them to be kind, be safe and be good learners. She has taught me a lot as we have worked together over the years to support children and families. I have been incredibly lucky to have worked with her at Sherwood! Joni has been instrumental in supporting the work of the principalship and keeping the focus on student learning. She is always thinking ahead and taking actions to help our school run more smoothly. Joni’s focus is on supporting families, students and staff in getting what they need to help all children learn. Students love coming to the office to be greeted by Joni, and many students aren’t quite ready to start their day until they have made a quick visit to the office to see her. Joni I have been so happy to work with her as a part of our office team at Sherwood!
