Early Entrance into Kindergarten or First Grade

Early Entrance into Kindergarten or First Grade (Pursuant to WAC 392-335- 010)

Per the state of Washington, a child must be 5 years of age as of midnight August 31 of the year of entry in order to enter kindergarten. However, as outlined by Edmonds School District School Board policy and procedure 3110 and 3110P children who turn 5 (Kindergarten) or 6 (First Grade) years of age between September 1 and December 31, 2020 may qualify for entry after successfully completing an assessment to evaluate school readiness.

Evaluations will be administered by District staff. Candidates must successfully pass all screening areas in order to be eligible for early entrance. Scores needed to pass both the screening and evaluation should reflect at above average developmentally.

To offset costs associated with the screening parents will be charged fees not to exceed $100. Families who may apply for a free evaluation if they believe their income is at the free/reduced lunch level. Fees will be collected as outlined in the early entrance application.  

Results from private psychologists will no longer be accepted.

To apply for an early entrance evaluation, please:
  • Review the Parent Packet (available here - Parent Packet 2020-2021)
  • Please note the important info for parents to consider before proceeding with the Early Entrance process on page 3 of the packet
  • Submit the application in the packet with proof of residency and proof of birth for your child to the address below no later than 4:00 pm on  May 27, 2020. No applications for evaluations will be accepted after May 27.

  • Parents who submit an application must also attend a mandatory informational meeting about Early Entrance on June 3, 2020 at 6:00 pm
  • The screening and evaluation will take place on June 6, 2020. 
  • Evaluation period: If the child passes the evaluation, early entrance is conditional pending the child’s successful completion of a 25 school day evaluation period which starts on the first day of school.
    • Extended absences during this evaluation period are not recommended and may impact the final decision on early entrance approval.
      • Candidates should be registered and begin school on the first day. The school team may decide at any time during the evaluation period if early entrance is appropriate.
    • Successful Kindergarten candidates must also attend Jump Start to Kindergarten in the summer.
    For First Grade Early Entrance only: Testing may be waived and the student considered for early entrance into first grade regardless of the date of birth if s/he successfully completes the kindergarten year at an OSPI accredited private kindergarten or the teacher at that school has a valid Washington state teaching certificate.
