The school change application process is for students requesting to attend a school that is not their neighborhood school.

Families may apply to have their students attend a school different from their neighborhood school if the requested school has classroom/student seats available to accept students who do not reside in their service area. It is important that parents register their students at their neighborhood school in the event we are unable to approve the school change request.

These schools will be OPEN to accept applications as space is available (see secondary process below): College Place Middle School, Lynnwood High School, and Mountlake Terrace High School.

These schools are CLOSED to school change for the 2022-23 school year: Alderwood Middle School, Brier Terrace Middle School, Meadowdale Middle School, Edmonds-Woodway High School, Meadowdale High School.

International Baccalaureate (IB) - is open to current 8th grade students who reside in the Edmonds School District service area and have taken the district administered Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) December 4, 2021.

Secondary School Change process:

  • Applications must be received at the Edmonds School District office by Friday, February 11, 2022

  • Please make plans for your student to begin at your neighborhood school until seat capacity for school change applicants is determined

  • For schools OPEN to School Change:
    • All applications received by the school change deadline for schools OPEN to school change will be accepted up to the number of spaces available at the requested school
    • When space is available, siblings of students who are currently enrolled may be accepted for school change to the same school provided the eligibility criteria are met by the sibling

  • In-district school change applications are only open to those students who are in good academic standing (No “F” grades and above a 2.0 GPA), have satisfactory attendance (no unexcused absences or excessive tardiness), and have no severe behavior violations (suspensions).
  • All secondary level applications received after the school change deadline will be considered in order received.
  • Out of district families may apply to attend any OPEN school. All students who apply to attend a school in the Edmonds School District will be considered based upon the same criteria as in-district students.

Important Notes:

  • Register at your neighborhood school if you are new to the Edmonds School District in case we are unable to approve your school change application
  • If approved, parents are responsible for transportation to and from the approved school
  • Secondary student athletes who make a change of schools without a corresponding change of residence must compete at the sub-varsity level for one calendar year
  • This process does not apply to Madrona Multi-Age K-8, Maplewood Parent Cooperative K-8, Edmonds Heights K-12, Edmonds K-8 Online Academy, Edmonds eLearning Academy, Scriber Lake High School, CLIP, or International Baccalaureate. Please contact these schools directly for their entry guidelines.
  • Students who are accepted for school change may continue to attend that school without reapplying in future years unless district attendance boundaries are changed or a school has exceeded its school/student seats available.
  • Parents of out-of-district students will be contacted prior to final approval to obtain a Choice Transfer Request (CTR) from their resident school district. The CTR will be required at the beginning of each school year that the student is enrolled in the Edmonds School District. Failure to submit a yearly CTR may result in the withdrawal of your child from the Edmonds School District.
  • Students must be enrolled with their correct permanent home address. Address verification will be required.
