Elementary Report Card
Understanding the Report Card
Revisions to the Elementary Report Card are being implemented in the 2026-27 school year. The revisions were made for several reasons including:
- Alignment to updated state standards
- Clearer descriptions for Behaviors That Promote Learning
- Use of a standards-based grading scale
- Providing descriptions of grades that are easier to understand
Learning about your child's progress begins with communications such as class newsletters, work samples, fall conferences, and individual parent-teacher communication.

Literacy: Reading, Writing & Language Grades
ELA
The Edmonds School District reports two major domains of English Language Arts on its elementary report card: Reading and Writing. The Language domain is also reported as part of the overall Writing component. While the state standards also include Speaking, Listening, and Digital Forums and Research and Media Literacy as two additional domains, those are not scored or reported on the district report card.
Link to Initial Washington State K-12 Learning Standards for English Language Arts
Reading: Four categories are scored under the Reading domain: Foundational Skills, Comprehending and Interpreting Texts, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Using Texts, and Effort. All but Effort are categories written into the Washington State Standards. Category descriptions are consistent across all grade levels K-6.
- Foundational Skills measures students' understanding of phonics and phonemic awareness to support reading accuracy and fluency.
- Comprehending and Interpreting Texts measures students' ability to interpret stories to understand themes, characters, and literary elementary found in fictional texts.
- Analyzing, Evaluating, and Using Texts measures students' ability to analyze and evaluate nonfiction text to gain knowledge and understanding.
- Effort measures students' overall participation in reading activities, their ability to respond to feedback, and their work to improve reading over time.
Finally, Reads and Understands Grade Level Texts reports an overall reading grade and will give a clear indicator of whether a student is reading at grade-level standard.
Writing: Four categories are scored under the Writing domain: Writing Purposes and Products, Writing Process, Language, and Effort. While not an exact match to the categories in the state standards, they have been slightly modified to connect more directly to how student writing is scored by teachers. Category descriptions in Writing Purposes and Products are divided into three sub-categories: Narrative, Informational, and Opinion. These are the three types of writing assessed by the SBA standardized test given in grades 3-6. The descriptions grow in complexity from year to year based on state standards.
- Writing Purposes and Products measures students' ability to write within the three genres tested on the SBA. Although students in grades K-2 are not assessed on the SBA, they will develop these skills throughout their primary years.
- Writing Process measures students' ability to plan, draft, revise, edit, publish, and share their writing. While the process will get more sophisticated over time, the steps remain the same in all elementary grade levels.
- Language measures students' ability to use correct grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure according to grade-level standards.
- Effort measures students' ability to participate in writing, respond to feedback, and their work to improve writing over time.
Unlike Reading, there is no overall Writing grade.

Math Grades
Math
The Edmonds School District reports elementary math grades based on the Washington State K-12 Learning Standards for Mathematics, which were officially updated and adopted by the state in June, 2026. The assessed standards are organized into four domains that remain consistent throughout all grade levels K-12: Data Analysis, Quantities, Relationships, and Spatial Reasoning. For our report card, we've written definitions for what is graded in each domain based on the priority standards identified by the state.
Link to Washington State K-12 Learning Standards for Mathematics
Below are the broad definitions of each domain as written by the state. For our grade-level definitions, use the tabs above to review each grade-level.
- Data Analysis: Standards that involve formulating statistical investigative questions, collecting, and considering data including measurements, creating data visualizations (ranging from bar graphs and histograms to scatterplots and complex representations as appropriate for the grade), and interpreting results and communicating justification for conclusions.
- Quantity: Standards that involve understanding and comparing quantities through mathematical operations. This starts with analysis of magnitude and comparison of quantities in the youngest grades (including math operations and symbols) and mathematical fluency using efficient, flexible, and accurate strategies. This moves towards using math operations for place value, decimal, and fractional reasoning in middle and late elementary school. Quantity culminates with examining number systems (real, integers, rational, irrational, etc.) in middle and high school grades.
- Relationships: Standards that develop strategic reasoning strategies and understanding of quantities as parts of a relationship, and interpreting and communicating about the relationship in context. Standards in this domain connect to concepts in data analysis, quantity, and spatial reasoning. In elementary students examine relationships through identifying parts and wholes, using mathematical fluency strategies to perform operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, connect decomposing and recomposing number strategies to shapes and fractions, then to geometry principles. Middle school students examine the relationships between parts to expressions and equations, proportionality, and set the groundwork for functions and abstract algebraic relationships in high school. Mathematical modeling of real-world relationships and problem solving are embedded within relational mathematical understanding across all grades.
- Spatial Reasoning: Standards that involve understanding shape and spread, both in geometry and data analysis (graphing). Standards in this domain also connect to relationships, quantity, and data analysis. In elementary grades, students define and examine attributes of shapes and geometric principles, and the quantities/measurements associated with those attributes. Middle school students extend their understanding within graphing relationships and geometric principles in the coordinate plane. High school students examine complex attributes of geometry, foundational trigonometric principles, and graphing real-world concepts to examine the meaning of shape and spread of data or a function in context.

Science Grades
Science
In the Edmonds School District, students participate in 3-4 Science units each year. The report card indicates how your student performed in each unit. The units are stored in kits that are rotated throughout the school district. If the unit was not taught during the grading period, you'll see a grade of 'NF - Not a Focus'. Science units fall into three categories, depending on the content: Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science. Students are also scored on an effort grade.

Music & Physical Education
Music
In the Edmonds School District, all K-6 students receive instruction in Music classes. In the primary grades (K-2), students are scored on behaviors exhibited while in class. These grades include effort and participation. In the intermediate grades (3-5), students receive two grades. One is for demonstrating their learning and understanding of musical concepts and skills, the other is for their effort and participation.
Students in 6th grade take instrumental music (either band or orchestra). They receive two grades, one for demonstrating their learning and understanding of musical concepts and skills, the other for effort and participation.
PE
In the Edmonds School District, all K-6 students take physical education classes. The Washington State Physical Education Standards were recently updated and students earn standards-based grades. Each student is scored in the following areas:
