Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent Kris McDuffyDear ESD Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year!  I hope you and your loved ones found time to rest, refresh and enjoy this amazing summer weather we have had!  A very warm welcome to all of our new new hires -- we are glad you’re here and a part of this amazing ESD Family!

We want to thank the incredible members of our team who worked all summer to get things ready to head into our new year.  Here is just a sampling of what was going on behind the scenes:  changes in bus routes; two schools moved; carpets cleaned; new roofs; field improvements; new sound systems; relocatables moved; 5,000 new Chromebooks distributed; walls built; interior & exterior painting; parking lots striped; and over 1,000 work orders completed.  Amazing work!  Join me in thanking these hard working members of our team!

We look forward to this “new beginning” with great enthusiasm, hope and determination.  One of the great things about our work is that each fall is a new beginning, but this one feels extra special and extra important.

I believe there has never been a more important time to be in Public Education.  Each of you are members of a family that do the world’s most important work!   Each of you make such a significant difference in the lives of the children, families and communities we serve.  And, each of you has the power to ensure that each and every student can succeed, regardless of their zip code, color of their skin, their native language, their gender/gender identity, their immigration status, their religion, or their social standing.  We are all about equity and excellence for each and every student!  You are super heroes.

In order to do this world’s most important, challenging and rewarding work, we continue our focus on building clarity, coherence and teamwork across our system:

*Clarity – defining who we are as a system; why we exist; what we stand for, what we won’t stand for;

*Coherence – our work that is logical, effective, efficient, and aligned (as well as limiting our initiatives!);

*Teamwork – collaborative culture, “helping all boats rise”

We ask your help with our focus on clarity by displaying in your classrooms, offices, work areas and meeting spaces our new poster entitled, “Our Commitment.”  It captures our critical four pillars:  Equity of Opportunity; Effective Learning for All Students; PK-3rd Grade Early Learning; and Graduates Who Are Ready for Life.  Those will be delivered to your schools and work sites next week.  Thank you for your help!

We have a lot of challenges and opportunities heading into this School Year and together we can tackle anything. We will be learning a lot more over the course of the next few months about the impacts of the new State Funding System.  Our Levy in February will be critically important and new rules about Levy’s will be out soon.  We will keep you informed as we learn more.

Wishing you the very best School Year ever!  Enjoy the journey and enjoy the amazing children entrusted to our care!  All the best.

With gratitude,

~Kris
