Superintendent's Biography

Dr. Gustavo Balderas began his life as the child of migrant farm workers in Eastern Oregon. At an early age he developed a love of learning, which led him to a rewarding career in education. 

Dr. Balderas has been an educator for 31 years. He started his career in education as a high school teacher and counselor in the Hillsboro School District. He moved on to elementary and middle school administrative roles and then served as an area director overseeing a cluster of K-12 schools and coordinating district curriculum, as well as serving as an assistant superintendent of support services, all within his 19 years in the Hillsboro School District. He served as superintendent in California and Oregon prior to beginning his tenure in the Edmonds School District in Edmonds, Washington.

Career highlights

In every district he has worked, Dr. Balderas has closed both achievement and opportunity gaps for all students by infusing articulated systems to improve outcomes and by using data to help inform all decision making in the school system.

In districts where he has worked, Dr. Balderas has developed equal access and opportunity to instruction and equity systems around student behavior and hiring practices.  In addition, Dr. Balderas has improved equity and culture proficiency in K-12 instruction through the Oregon Leadership Network and the Oregon State Action for Educational Leadership Project. 

Community engagement

Dr. Balderas is passionate about engaging with the communities he serves. He collaborates with other government agencies, area businesses and non-profit organizations to provide the highest quality of education and care for students.

Dr. Balderas currently sits on various boards in Washington state including the Snohomish County Boys and Girls Club Board and the Edmonds Teachers of Color Foundation Board.  He currently serves as treasurer of Northwest Regional Representatives and is also president-elect for the national Association of Latino Administrators Superintendents. He also serves as a volunteer consulting superintendent for the Educational Research and Development Institute and the Suburban School Superintendents national organizations. 

Prior to his work in Washington state, Dr. Balderas was a founding member and past president of the Oregon Association of Latino Administrators.  He also served on the Oregon State Board of Education as an advisor and was a member on numerous local boards throughout Oregon, including the Oregon State Activities Association and the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators Equity Committee. 

Distinguished honors

Dr. Balderas was named the Oregon Distinguished Latinx Educator of the Year, the Oregon Superintendent of the Year, and AASA National Superintendent of the Year.
