Important Message for Parents/Guadians of High School Juniors and Seniors
Who Have Not Yet Passed the Math WASL
March 2008
If you received a mailed copy of this letter, our district records show that you have a high school junior or
senior who has not yet passed the math portion of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). While passing
the Math WASL is not a requirement to graduate, your student must meet certain other conditions in order to receive a diploma.
Students who have not passed the Math WASL must meet two other conditions in order to be eligible to graduate:
- Earn additional math credits
- Seniors must earn one math credit after 11th grade.
- Juniors must earn two math credits after 10th grade.
If your son/daughter did not pass his/her first semester math class, it is important that you
contact the school to discuss options. Summer school information will be available in the
coming weeks as well as other alternatives to meeting this credit requirement.
- Attempt the Math WASL or acceptable alternate math assessment at least once each
year until graduation or until passing the assessment
Your son/daughter must take the Math WASL on April 15 and 16, 2008, unless s/he has
taken one of the following acceptable alternatives during this school year:
- Math WASL in August 2007
- Math Collection of Evidence (COE) submitted in February 2008
- PSAT - mathematics (only through August 31, 2008)
- SAT - mathematics
- ACT – mathematics
- Calculus Advanced Placement (AP) examination
- Statistics Advanced Placement (AP) examination
- Math WAAS Portfolio in 2007-08 (only for Special Education students)
- Math DAW (Developmentally Appropriate WASL) in November 2007 or in March 2008
(only for Special Education juniors or seniors)
- Math Locally Determined Assessment (only for Special Education seniors)
If your son/daughter attempted the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or AP math tests this year, s/he
must give a copy of the score report to his/her counselor to waive the requirement of
taking the Math WASL this April.
Students in Running Start classes at Edmonds Community College who have a class
scheduled at the time of the Math WASL just need to inform their EdCC instructor who will
give them an excused absence and reschedule any exams for them.
Students who have met all other graduation requirements but have not passed the Math WASL (or an
acceptable alternative), and who meet the two conditions described above, will earn their diploma but
not the Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA) or Certificate of individual Achievement (CIA).
For a listing of all graduation requirements in the Edmonds School District, go to
http://staff.edmonds.wednet.edu/tl/Sec/GradReq/Diploma.pdf.
If you have questions, please contact your student’s counselor, or email
WASL@edmonds.wednet.edu.
