Darrol Haug is Making a Difference!
Maplewood Volunteer Provides Math Worksheets to Other Volunteers

Longtime math tutor and community member Darrol Haug has provided math guidance to many children attending Maplewood Coop. In January 2007, he took this support to the next level by sharing tips and guidance with a group of school paraeducators. His effective technique for supporting math learning is now positively impacting students in other schools. The materials below are resources developed by Darrol that can be printed and utilized when working with children on improving their math skills.

Math Tools for Basic Multiplication and Division

This information supports the Edmonds School District math standards for multiplication and division for grades 3 and 4. While this information is geared to the standards for the third and fourth grades it can be used to assess any student on their mastery of multiplication and division facts.

These tools give the teacher, the parent, or the student themselves an easy way to evaluate if the student is meeting the standards, and, if not, some useful tools to help with improving their skills. These tools have been tested and reviewed by a number of Edmonds School District staff and have been used successfully for one-on-one tutoring with students up to the seventh grade. Students and parents have also used the tools successfully.

This packet contains 5 modules to help access and improve basic multiplication and division skills.

1. The Edmonds School District Standards (PDF) for multiplication and division are graphically displayed for the third and fourth grades on the standards sheet. For students having difficulty with math it can often be traced to the lack of basic knowledge. This material is designed to show what the standards are and provide material to help with those students having difficulty.


2. The Evaluation Tool (PDF) can be use to help identify current student achievement level. This tool has been used by teachers, parents and students to help them assess the knowledge level for basic multiplication and division facts. It can also used as a practice sheet.


3. The Practice Selector (PDF) sheet is a useful tool to help determine the areas of proficiency and the areas needing improvement. By identifying the specific areas needing improvement, we can more efficiently provide practice sheets targeted to those specific areas.


4. The Practice Sheets are matched to the 4 achievement levels identified in the student evaluation and are further offered for both multiplication and division. A total of 8 separate practice sheets are available.


5. A Tips Sheet highlights some helpful ways to use the material that has worked with parents and students to improve the students basic math skills
