Connecting Windows-Based Computers to Edmonds Wireless

STOP! Before you go any further, if the district owns the computer you want to connect, it should connect automatically. Call 7333, tell the Help Desk the barcode of your computer, and ask for help with why it is not connecting. They will do some basic troubleshooting, make sure it is in the domain, and update its policies.

edmonds_wpa vs. edmonds_wep

All Edmonds School District sites have two wireless networks: edmonds_wpa and edmonds_wep. WPA is more secure, and thus the better choice; however, some older machines are unable to connect to it and those machines will use wep instead.

If the district does not own the computer you want to connect, please review these requirements:

How to Connect

Follow these steps to connect a non-district-owned computer to the wireless network. Notes:

  1. Open Control Panel (from the Start menu, choose Control Panel, or choose Settings and then choose Control Panel)
  2. If you see Pick a category, click Switch to Classic View (otherwise, continue to step 3)
  3. Control Panel: Switch to Classic View

  4. Double-click Network Connections
  5. Control Panel: Network Connections

  6. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties

  8. If the following message opens, click OK
  9. Message: Some controls disabled

  10. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless Networks tab

  12. On the Wireless Networks tab, click Add
  13. Wireless Networks: Add

  14. Enter the following information (do not click OK yet)
  15. Network name: edmonds_wpa; Network Authentication: WPA; Data encryption: TKIP

  16. Click the Authentication tab

  18. On the Authentication tab, set EAP type to Protected EAP (PEAP) and click Properties
  19. EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP): Properties

    The Protected EAP properties window opens

  20. Enter the following information and click Configure
  21. Check validate server certificate; no check Connect to servers; Trusted Root Certification: Scroll to select Thawte Premium Server CA; check Do not prompt user; Click Configure

    The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box opens

  22. Deselect Automatically use my Windows logon... and click OK
  23. Deselect "Automatically use..."; click OK

  24. In the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, click OK
  25. Protected EAP Properties: click OK

  26. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click OK
  27. Wireless Network Connection Properties: click OK

    The Enter Credentials dialog box opens

  28. In the Enter Credentials dialog box, enter your district user name and password and then click OK
  29. Enter User name and password; Logon domain: leave blank or enter MISO if blank does not work; click OK

    Note: For guest credentials, please call the Help Desk at ext 7333

    Student user names and passwords will not work. Students need to use district-owned computers to connect to the Edmonds wireless network.
