How to Burn CDs

Saving information on a CD is called "burning."

Burn a CD to backup important files or share large files (such as photographs, Photo Story videos, and Audacity audio files).

Burning CDs

To burn a CD:

  1. Open the CD drive door on the left side of the Gateway by pushing the small rectangular button.
  2. Carefully snap the CD into the drive.
  3. Close the drive door until it clicks shut
  4. Wait until a prompt opens asking what you want to do with the disk.

  5. Select "Open writable CD folder using Windows Explorer" and click OK
  6. Note: Your computer will have more or fewer options depending on the programs you have installed. If necessary, scroll to find the "Open writable CD" option.

  7. When the writable CD window opens, drag the files and/or folders you want to have on the CD into the window
  8. When all the files you want to burn are in the window, in the left panel of the window, click Write these files to CD
  9. Note: If you do not see Write these files to CD on the left panel, choose it from the File menu

    The CD Writing Wizard opens

  10. In the CD Writing Wizard, type a short name for your CD and click Next
  11. Wait while the CD burns
  12. When the final screen opens, the CD ejects itself. Label the CD with a felt-tip permanent marker. Do NOT use a ball point pen.
  13. Click Finish
  14. Note: To burn additional CDs with the same information, check the box, click Finish, and follow the on-screen directions

  15. To view the CD, put the CD back in the drive and from the Start menu, choose My Computer
