Gateway Function (Fn) Keys

On your keyboard, several keys have purplish words or symbols in addition to the standard white words, letters, numbers, and symbols. Just like you hold down the Shift key to type the white characters on top of the number keys, you hold down the Fn (or Function) key to do the things represented by the purplish words or symbols.

Some essential functions are listed below. To find out additional functions, see the Gateway User Manual.

Fn + F2

Fn + F2

Fn+F2 toggles the Wireless “sniffer” on your computer. Turn wireless off when you are not plugged into power and not using wireless using it to extend your battery life. When wireless is on, the wireless symbol below the touchpad is lit.

Fn + F3

Fn+F3

Fn+F3 tells the computer to Sleep. Whenever you leave the computer on while you are away and the computer is not plugged into power, have it Sleep for two reasons:

To Wake the computer from Sleep, press the Power button.

If the computer is plugged into power when you walk away or leave it overnight, Log Off or press the flying window key (between Ctrl and Alt) and the letter L to Lock the computer. The computer will 'wake up' faster when you log on at your return, and process any needed updates while you are away. If you use Sleep (Fn + F3), it will not get updates.

Fn + F4

Fn+F4

Fn+F4 cycles through projector display options. After connecting to the projector and logging onto the computer, press Fn+F4 and Wait a couple times to cycle through the following:

Each time you press Fn + F4, the display cycles from one bullet in the list to the next.

Wait until the display changes before you press Fn+F4 again.

You will need to press Fn+F4, and wait, two times to display on the projector and laptop at the same time.

Note: If it does not show on the projector, try pressing Source on the document presenter!

Fn+Up or Down Arrow

Fn +Up and Down Arrows

Fn+Up or Down Arrows adjusts the Brightness. By default, when not plugged into power, the brightness is set low to extend your battery life. When you are in bright environments, you may need to increase the brightness by pressing Fn+Up Arrow several times.
