School Transfer Information
for 2008-09 School Year

Families in the Edmonds School District may apply to have their students attend a school different from their home service area school if the school has the capacity to accept transfers. Because the following schools are at or above enrollment capacity, they are closed to transfer for the 2008-2009 school year. No wait list will be kept at these schools. Middle Schools including the middle school levels at Terrace Park K-8 are open to transfer for one month only.

GENERAL GUIDELINES – Schools Open to Transfer

Students who are accepted for transfer to an open school may continue to attend that school without reapplying in future years unless district attendance boundaries are changed or a school is determined to exceed its enrollment capacity. Attendance at a school on transfer does not guarantee that the student will move on to attend middle or high school in that service area. For example, if you transfer to Meadowdale Middle School, you do not automatically attend Meadowdale High School.

Parents are responsible for transporting students to choice schools outside of their resident service area.

Elementary Transfers are accepted until June 1, 2008

Out-of-district secondary students will be enrolled only if a school has space after enrolling in-district students and must submit a release of attendance from their resident school district each year prior to being enrolled and beginning class.

Students must be enrolled with their correct permanent home address. Address verification will be required.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRANSFER APPLICATIONS

Middle school transfer application forms will be available January 14, 2008, at school offices and the district Student Support & Outreach Programs Department. Transfer forms should be submitted directly to the Student Support and Outreach Programs Department. Once a transfer is approved space will not be held at the releasing school, so students and parents should decide carefully. District high schools are closed to transfer for the 2008-09 school year. Questions can be directed to (425) 431-7201.

DEADLINES

Middle school transfer applications are due to the Student Support & Outreach Programs Department on or before February 8, 2008.

LOTTERY SELECTION

If more students apply for transfer to a middle school than a school has the capacity to accept, selection will be done by lottery following the transfer deadline. Parents will be notified by mail of the outcome of the selection process during the week of February 11, 2008.

LATE APPLICATIONS

Applications will not be accepted after the February 8, 2008 deadline. Late applications will need to go through the transfer appeal process.

ELEMENTARY & PART TIME KINDERGARTEN TRANSFER APPLICATIONS

Elementary transfer application forms will be available after January 14, 2008 at school offices. Elementary transfer forms should be submitted directly to the school(s) of choice at any time. Parents must first register their student in the resident area school. All requests will be held until June 1, 2008. After June 1, principals may either accept transfer enrollment for the following school year with a signed letter of agreement with the parent, or ask that parents wait to start transfer students until after enrollment stabilizes in September. In either case, enrollment is not guaranteed until enrollment stabilizes in September and it has been determined that space is available for transfer students. Children of full-time staff members will be given first priority, followed by siblings of current students, followed by students with daycare in the service area. Parents are responsible for transportation for transfer students. Students are not guaranteed attendance at the service area middle school.

FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN

Transfers to full-day tuition-based programs at schools both open and closed to transfer may be guaranteed to parents after June 1, at the principal’s discretion without a signed letter of agreement. Enrollment is not guaranteed after the kindergarten year. Parents are responsible for transportation for transfer students.

Transfers to Cedar Valley and College Place Elementary will be held on a wait list until school begins in September and will be limited to students who qualify for scholarships. These parents must complete the Kindergarten Tuition Financial Aid Application.

DEADLINES

Elementary transfer applications should be submitted to the school before June 1 for the following school year.

TRANSFER APPEALS

Appeals to the transfer process and closed schools are made through the Student Support & Outreach Programs Department of the Edmonds School District. For further information contact (425) 431-7142.
