Lamp and Bulb Recycling

Because lamps and bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, an element that is classified as hazardous material, all lamps and bulbs will be recycled.

1. All unbroken used lamps/bulbs are to be repacked in their original boxes.

2. The ends of these boxes are to be sealed with sturdy tape; boxes are to be labeled with date, location and marked as “waste”.

3. Boxes are not to be stored in boiler rooms.

4. Broken lamps are to be boxed separately and marked as such; boxes are to be labeled with date, location and marked as “broken bulbs - waste”.

5. Fiber drums for packing burned out lamps/bulbs may be provided if needed.

6. A minimum of 3 boxes at each site is needed before Warehouse will pick-up. A hauling order must also be completed.

7. All metal halide bulbs need to be recycled as do high-pressure sodium bulbs.

8. Incandescent bulbs do not need to be recycled.

If any of the following are found amongst the lamps/bulbs coming from your sites they will not be picked up by the warehouse and/or extra charges will apply:

1. Broken lamps/bulbs packed with unbroken ones.
2. Improperly packaged lamps (not following directions listed above).
3. Lamps/bulbs taped together.
4. Lamps/bulbs packaged in wet boxes.
5. Lamps with attached ballasts and unsorted lamps. Example: 4-foot lamp with 8-foot lamp.

The following information also pertains to this process:

1. Regular incandescent bulbs do not need to be recycled.
2. All metal halide bulbs and all high-pressure sodium bulbs need to be recycled.
3. Four foot and eight foot lamps must be boxed separately – length is the determining factor.
