All courses are one semester long and earn .5 credit unless otherwise noted.

The mission of Family & Consumer Sciences Education is to prepare individuals to be competent, confident and caring in managing their personal, family, and career lives. Family & Consumer Sciences programs are active, relevant and diverse. They focus on improving the quality of life for individuals and families; they provide education and training for related careers. The potential for satisfaction in life is increased when individuals are able to manage their resources, maintain health and relationships and assume responsible leadership both in the home and the community.


Interior Design (HEC 461/462)

Prerequisite: Grade 10,11,12

Length:  2 semesters/year long

Credit:  .5 per semester

Make decisions that designers make every day. Learn about color, furnishings and floor plans to help you in your design choices. Use knowledge of elements and principles of design to complete projects in class and at home. Career choice and applications explored. Students will demonstrate the elements and principles of design through career and home application projects related to interior design.

Explore prenatal development; theories of development and brain research. Examine and compare guidance techniques. Develop awareness of resources for parents and children. Explore careers involving children. Observe infants and plan activities for and with toddlers and preschoolers. S

Tech Prep credit is avilable upon completion of both Child Development and Senior Experience with a "B: or better in both courses.

American Sign Language 1 (FLA101/102)

Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gestural language, through the use of conversational methods. Course focus is on learning new vocabulary, proper grammatical usage and culturally appropriate behavior regarding deaf people. Students expressive skills are evaluated through the use of video tape in which the students sign vocabulary, dialogues, copy-sign, and tell stories. Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories). The $13 fee covers a class binder and video tape. This course is part of the TechPrep program. Through an articulation agreement with Seattle Central Community College, students may earn 5 college credits for just $35.

Continuation of ASL with focus on certain grammatical features such as spatialization, directionality, and non-manual components. This course will entail vocabulary expansion and continued study of deaf culture. Students expressive skills are evaluated through the use of video tape in which the students sign vocabulary, dialogues, copy-sign, and tell stories. Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories). The $13 fee covers a class binder and video tape. This course is part of the TechPrep program. Through an articulation agreement with Seattle Central Community College, students may earn 5 college credits for just $35.

Students will continue vocabulary development and will be able to participate in most formal and informal conversations on social and work topics. Students expressive skills are evaluated through the use of video tape in which the students sign vocabulary, dialogues, copy-sign, and tell stories. Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories). The $13 fee covers a class binder and video tape.  Advanced Photography (ART000)

This course extends the experiences gained in beginning photography. Students will further expand on traditional film photography and darkroom techniques, as well as extend their work into digital photography. Instruction emphasizes observation, composition, imagination and basic photography skills. It is strongly recommended that students have access to their own 35mm SLR camera. Advanced students will serve as mentors to beginning students. Learning will be assessed in a variety of methods: effort, creativity, demonstration of ability to apply knowledge, projects and research. Students also will be assessed on the quality of the portfolio of their work that they create during the course.

 Digital Photography (IAR431)

Do you like taking photographs but don't like the thought of a dark room? Then this is the class for you! Learn all the skills of photography in the modern digital world. You will be able to take pictures using state of the art digital cameras and digitally process them using Adobe Photoshop on state of the art computers. Pictures will be printed on and mounted for presentation. Learning will be assessed in a variety of methods: effort, creativity, demonstration of ability to apply knowledge, projects and research. Students also will be assessed on the quality of the portfolio of their work that they create during the course.

Did you love digital photography and want more?  Explore in depth the fascinating world of digital photography.  Learn and put to use the finer points of digital cameras, file structures, and all Photoshop has to offer.  Prepare assignments in sports, events, photojournalism and portraits for publication.
Learning will be assessed in a variety of methods:  comparisons to scoring rubrics and models, traditional tests, demonstrations of ability to apply knowledge, projects, teacher ob
servations/evaluations, peer evaluations, and journals.

Digital Communications (COM119)

Prerequisite:  Concurrent enrollment in English 9

Length:  1 semester

Students learn and master skills and competencies in current technology through simulation as help desk employees of the "ACME Computer Company." This course is a mixture of self-directed study, online chats and threaded discussions, online quizzes and project-based assignments. Throughout this trimester course, students complete a variety of modules: Introduction to Distance Learning, The History of Computers, Basic Computer Skills, The Internet, Computer Hardware, Intro to Microsoft XP Applications, and Career Planning and Preparation. Basic keyboarding skill building will also be taught in this course.

Learning will be assessed through self-directed study, online evaluations through scoring rubrics, traditional tests/quizzes, project based assignments, teacher observation/evaluation, peer evaluations, and online discussion.
