Biology  (SCI201/202)

Prerequisite: None

Supplies:  Laboratory notebook required
Length:2 semesters/year long
Credits:  .5 per semester

Biology is a lab science and covers the following topics: the study of living organisms, their interrelatedness with their environments, the similarities involved in their life processes, the process of science, unity and diversity among living things, heredity, evolution, and ecology, and earth science as it relates to the history of life. Laboratory notebooks are required.

Students will demonstrate learning through a variety of methods. Students will primarily complete written tests and quizzes and keep a detailed lab journal complete with labs, in class demonstrations, homework and classroom assignments. Students will also be required to complete a self designed and implemented laboratory investigation task.

Physical Science  (SCI101/102)

Prerequisite: None  

Length: 2 semesters/year long
Credits:  .5 per semester

Introductory course designed to explore concepts in astronomy, chemistry and physics. This includes: 
* Astronomy: Explore the origins and make-up of many deep sky objects, such as nebulae, supernovas, and black holes. 
* Chemistry: Discover the atom and its relationship to the periodic table and basic chemical reactions along with their relation to earth's composition. 
*Physics: Experience basic laws of motion and forces and how these laws apply to the universe as well as your lives

Students will demonstrate learning through a variety of methods. Students will primarily complete three tests per trimester and weekly quizzes as well as a detailed lab journal. Students will also be required to complete three self designed and implemented laboratory investigation tasks throughout the year focusing on pendulum motion, wave motion and identifying an unknown chemical.

Chemistry (SCI301/302)

Prerequisite: Physical Science and passing grade in Geometry 

Length: 2 semesters/year long
Credits:  .5 per semester

This is a first-year lab course devoted to understanding the concepts and principles, which underlie all chemical phenomena. Using an inquiry approach, the primary focus is to understand these concepts in context; connections between the scientific principles and their application will be developed. This course covers the following topics: the particulate theory of matter, states of matter, chemical and physical properties, solutions, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, oxidation-reduction, chemical bonding, atomic structure, periodicity, nuclear process, and atmospheric chemistry.

Students will be evaluated on quizzes and tests as well as lab journals documenting labs and in class exercises. Students will also perform one or two investigations outside of class dealing with the predominance of chemistry in their own daily lives.

Physics (SCI501/502)

Prerequisite: 9/10 Core; Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II 

Length: 2 semesters/year long
Credits: .5 per semester

Physics is an introductory course in which students develop an understanding of the concepts and principles that govern the natural world through topics such as acceleration, motion and electricity.

Students will demonstrate learning through a variety of methods, including a detailed lab journal modeled after those kept by practicing biologists. Assessments will also include written tests and quizzes and oral presentation of work. Students may also be required to complete a self designed and implemented

Advanced Topics in Biology  (SCI603)

Prerequisite: None 

Length: 1 semester
Credits: .5

Spend one semester focusing on one specific topic in Biology. Topic will vary by trimester and teacher. Examples include Genetics, Microbiology, Botany, Comparative Anatomy and Physiology, Biotechnology, Zoology, Cell Biology, Ecology, etc. This course fulfills science lab requirement for graduation. Learn about the ART of the natural world!

Students will demonstrate learning through a variety of methods, including a detailed lab journal modeled after those kept by practicing biologists. Assessments will also include written tests and quizzes and oral presentation of work. Students may also be required to complete a self designed and implemented laboratory investigation task.
