American Sign Language 1A/1B (FLA101/102)

Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gestural language, through the use of conversational methods. Course focus is on learning new vocabulary, proper grammatical usage and culturally appropriate behavior regarding deaf people. Students expressive skills are evaluated through the use of video tape in which the students sign vocabulary, dialogues, copy-sign, and tell stories. Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories). The $12 fee covers a class binder and video tape. This course is part of the TechPrep program. Through an articulation agreement with Seattle Central Community College, students may earn 5 college credits for just $35.

American Sign Language 2A/2B (FLA201/202)

Prerequisite: American Sign Language 1 or teacher permission

Continuation of ASL with focus on certain grammatical features such as spatialization, directionality, and non-manual components. This course will entail vocabulary expansion and continued study of deaf culture. Students expressive skills are evaluated through the use of video tape in which the students sign vocabulary, dialogues, copy-sign, and tell stories. Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories). The $12 fee covers a class binder and video tape. Continuation to expand receptive and expressive skills developed in 2nd year ASL. Students will continue vocabulary development and will be able to participate in most formal and informal conversations on social and work topics. Ongoing discussion of the deaf community and its cultural aspects. Students expressive skills are evaluated through the use of video tape in which the students sign vocabulary, dialogues, copy-sign, and tell stories. Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories). The $12 fee covers a class binder and video tape. Continuation of 3rd year ASL. Includes a review of essentials of grammar with emphasis on building vocabulary, conversational skills, and introduction to literature (including drama, prose, and poetry). Students do self-evaluations on receptive skills (translations, viewing ASL dialogues, narratives, and stories).
