  • Business Technology
  • F.I.S.T.

    Co-requisite: Must be taken with FIST Health & FIST FACSE for a year long class

    Freshmen will participate in the Freshman Instructional Skills Training course, introducing them to various elective programs and developing essential skills for success in our school. For the business technology portion of this program, students will learn relevant technology skills and resources available within AOS to promote and enculture better academic success in their futures. Examples are usage of color printers, scanners, digital cameras, LCD panels, laptops, networking, e-mail technique and etiquette and a myriad of software programs and additional computer hardware. Basic keyboarding skill building will also be taught in this course.

    Learning will be assessed in a variety of methods: comparison grading to scoring rubrics, project based learning, demonstration of ability to apply knowledge of skills learned, teacher observations/evaluations, peer evaluations, and self assessments.

    Fundamentals of Technology

    Prerequisite: None
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    Students learn and master skills and competencies in current technology through simulation as help desk employees of the "ACME Computer Company." This course is a mixture of self-directed study, online chats and threaded discussions, online quizzes and project-based assignments. Throughout this trimester course, students complete a variety of modules: Introduction to Distance Learning, The History of Computers, Basic Computer Skills, The Internet, Computer Hardware, Intro to Microsoft XP Applications, and Career Planning and Preparation. Basic keyboarding skill building will also be taught in this course.

    Learning will be assessed through self-directed study, online evaluations through scoring rubrics, traditional tests/quizzes, project based assignments, teacher observation/evaluation, peer evaluations, and online discussion.

    Web Authoring and Internet Basics

    Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Technology
    Length: 3 trimesters/year long
    Credits: .34 per trimester

    This class will teach students not just how to access the Internet but how to use this immense resource as a tool. Searching efficiently, search engines, Web page creation using Front Page and Dreamweaver, graphic enhancement using Fireworks and FLASH, in addition to html programming are some of the software programs this course will cover. This course does an excellent job of generating skilled computer users.

    Introduction to Web Authoring

    Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Technology
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    In the first trimester of Web Authoring, students will experience Internet learning tools such as; history of the Internet, ethics and security, networking, and various search engines. Introduction to web design and layout aesthetics will be included in this trimester. Additionally, students will then gain a thorough understanding of html programming.

    Intermediate Web Authoring

    Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Technology
    Length: 1 trimester

    In the second trimester of Web Authoring, students will learn the fundamentals of Microsoft Front Page. Skills to be learned include; creating basic web sites, formatting colors, schemes and backgrounds, adding and navigating links, graphic usage/enhancement, and manipulating tables.

    Advanced Web Authoring

    Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Technology
    Length: 1 trimester

    During the third trimester of Web Authoring, students will get a first hand experience with the Macromedia software package. Students will learn exciting industry standard programs such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash in their web page creating experience.

    Business Law

    Prerequisite: None
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    This course is a must for the student interested in a business career and for the student interested in learning his or her rights and responsibilities. Students will learn about ethics, morals, contracts, torts, liabilities, and even visit a courtroom. The information covered in this class is the type of data all informed consumers should be aware of.

    Assistant: Business Tech. Labs

    Prerequisite: Teacher Permission Only
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    Assist students during business technology courses. Troubleshooting software and equipment problems. Develop basic Windows competencies and increase computer technology/lab management skills.

    Student learning will be assessed by exhibition of basic Windows, computer hardware and software, and troubleshooting proficiency.

    Advanced Business Computer Apps

    Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Technology
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    This is an advanced level class that lets the students experience the abilities of an integrated software program. The students will be using Microsoft Office XP which includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Front Page. This course is very hands-on and will call on the students to read and interpret technical directions. Students will acquire skills in this course that will be useful for both their educations and their careers.

  • Industrial Technology

    CAD Drafting & 3D Design

    Prerequisite: None
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    CAD Drafting & 3D is a cool repeatable, hands-on Engineering Graphics course where you will:
    * Discover AutoCAD and Rhinoceros and the skills commonly used in Engineering Drafting and Design by designing, drawing, and modeling cool things.
    * Learn Drafting and 3D Modeling principles using problem-solving assignments based on your individual achievement level.
    * The 2D and 3D graphical skills learned are in high demand in the world of Engineering, Product Design, and Computer Animation.
    * Earn 4 credits of Tech Prep Technical College credit with a B or better. Course may be REPEATED to learn Advanced Drafting knowledge and skills with the opportunity to earn a total of 14 total credits of transferable Technical College credit thus saving over $800.

    In CAD Drafting & 3D your hands-on learning is demonstrated through:
    * Creation of precision scale drawings and 3D models combined into units and turned in
    * Quizzes and tests * A fun 4 week culminating project applying skills learned during the trimester
    * A Portfolio of all work submitted during the trimester that would be suitable for use in an Engineering related job interview and/or for Advanced Placement in a Technical College Engineering Graphics course

    Auto Basics

    Prerequisite: None
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    Auto Basics is a cool course that is an introduction to the automobile:
    * Discover consumer and car owner knowledge and skills that can save you thousands of dollars.
    * Learn about engines and the various systems of the automobile.
    * Find out about a possible career as an Automotive Technician.
    * Successful completion of this course allows you to register for the District Automotive Technology program at Meadowdale High.

    In Auto Basics your learning is demonstrated through:
    * Daily work combined into units turned in
    * Quizzes and tests
    * Fun hands-on assessments using run able Briggs & Stratton 5 hp small engines and also using student automobiles as available.

    3D Computer Design

    Prerequisite: None
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    3D Computer Design is a neat class where you will:
    * Learn 3D Computer Design and Modeling using a slick new commercial program called RHINO that can be used to model everything from a heart valve to a ship hull and mouse to a monster
    * Create free-form 3D designs as well as precision 3D designs using curves, surfaces, and solids.
    * Transfer your designs to AutoCAD and possibly also to a computer controlled milling machine to form them out of plastic, wood, or metal.
    * Learn skills that are in high demand in the world of engineering, new product design, and computer animation.

    In 3D Computer Design your hands-on learning is demonstrated through:
    * Creation of precision and free-form 3D models combined into units and turned in
    * Quizzes and tests
    * A fun 3 week culminating project applying skills learned during the trimester

    Auto Technology

    Prerequisite: None
    Length: 1 trimester
    Credits: .34

    In this cool class discover more in-depth automotive knowledge and skills than possible in Auto Basics:
    * More time allotted to hands-on automotive skill development.
    * Learn about a possible career as an ASE Certified Auto Technician. * Prepare for entrance to the District Automotive Tech Center at Meadowdale High School that can lead to the prestigious Shoreline CC dealer-sponsored training programs for GM, Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota.

    In Auto Technology (yr. long) your learning is demonstrated through:
    * Daily work combined into units turned in
    * Quizzes and tests
    * Cool hands-on assessments using run-able Briggs & Stratton 5 hp small engines, student automobiles as available, and student generated projects in the Auto Lab
