is a sport that was originally only for men.

 

About 500 years ago however, women began to play. It was a woman, in fact, that came up with the term "caddy", and commissioned the building of Golf's holy grail: St. Andrews in 1552. This woman was none other than Mary Queen of Scots, who called her assistants on the course "cadets" hence the term "caddy". She is also considered as the first woman in history to play golf.

The first ever US Women's Open was played in 1946 and was won by Patty Berg.

Issette Pearson Miller of London, helped create one of the first handicapping systems in the late 1800s, which allowed players of different levels to compete more fairly.
