Counselors
can handle questions or difficulties that a student
might have, from class schedules to family problems,
to referrals to other local professionals in the
area for things such as drug-alcohol abuse issues
or reports of abuse and/or neglect. Counselors listen
and help students as well as serve as resources
to parents and teachers regarding performance in
classes, which may include arranging for conferences.
Student confidences are respected according to law.
Lynnwood High School counselors can be reached
at (425) 431-7530. The counseling staff is:
Drug/Alcohol Intervention Specialist:
Lisa Lester (425) 431-5251) is our Alcohol/Drug Intervention
Specialist at Lynnwood High School. She is a Certified
Chemical Dependency Counselor and certified as
a Youth Counselor. She specializes in working
with adolescents and their families both in a
school setting and through her agency, Youth Eastside
Services, in Bellevue. Lisa is in the building
three days a week to meet individually with students,
lead groups and be a resource person to students,
parents, staff and administrators. Students may
refer themselves or may be referred by staff.
Due to federal confidentiality laws, all interactions
with Lisa will remain confidential. Students today
are faced with many choices. Groups are available
for those students interested in understanding
choices, decision making and building self-esteem.
Groups meet once a week and are on a rotating
schedule. All attendance is voluntary and credit
may be earned if prior arrangement has been made.
Nurse/Health Resources: Lynnwood High
School has a part-time Registered Nurse on campus.
Students may come to the health center located
in the Counseling Center if they are feeling ill
and wanting to go home, or if they have sustained
an injury. Trained staff members are on duty to
help these students. Students will be checked
in and out of the Health Center. Except for emergencies
or students waiting for transportation, use of
the Health Center is limited to 20 minutes. In
emergency situations a student's parent or doctor
can be called, the nurse may be requested or 911
may be contacted. Again, it is imperative that
the Counseling Center be kept current on accurate
phone numbers for parents at home and at work.
Important medical information should also be provided.
Students who need to take medication during the
school day should provide written permission from
a doctor as well as a prescription bottle with
the name of the student, the type of medication
and instructions for taking printed on the
bottle that has been prepared by a registered pharmacist.
