All
students must demonstrate their learning at the
proficient level in a culminating project in order
to graduate. The culminating project is a validation,
celebration, and rite of passage that allows students
to demonstrate their prior learning and share it
with their peers and community. Completing this
project shows the culmination of a K-12 education.
It gives students the chance to demonstrate individual
student growth across state learning goals. The
culminating project provides opportunities to demonstrate
diverse learning styles and interests. The culminating
project also connects the community to the school
and student. A public presentation is a required
component of all culminating projects. This pres-entation
is evaluated by a panel made up of staff and community
members.
The Culminating Senior Project is required for
graduation from the Edmonds
School District. Although basic Senior Project
requirements and evaluation criteria are the same
district-wide, individual high schools determine
exactly how the Senior Project is implemented
in their school. There are 5 phases to the Senior
Project at Lynnwood High School: Proposal, Research
and Applied Learning, Portfolio, Presentation
and Reflection Essay. The purpose of the Senior
Project is to provide: a forum for you to demonstrate
the ability to apply the skills and knowledge
you have gained in school and elsewhere; a situation
in which you do in-depth learning in an area of
particular interest to you; a public exhibition
of what you know and are able to do; a significant
step toward becoming a life-long learner. Many
students use the Senior Project as a chance to
explore a career or do a service for the community.
For others it is a chance to learn about something
that is not a part of the curriculum at Lynnwood
High School. Regardless of the direction your
project takes, the best part is that you get to
design it. The Senior Project experience is what
you make of it. Senior Project is formally introduced
to students in their English class. As students
work on and complete the project, their progress
is monitored in senior English classes.
