Services

Cultural Activities

The Indian Education Program plans several cultural activities throughout the year, open to all students in the program and their families. Speakers, storytellers, dancers, drummers, craftspeople, and Two Birdz Youth Powwow Singers & Dancers share their skill and experiences with our students each month. Students and their families also participate in field trips and regional cultural events to engage their knowledge and appreciation of their Indian traditions and heritage. Newsletters are mailed to students and families that list cultural activities, events, exhibits, and powwows in the Pacific Northwest.

Tutoring

The After School Program (ASP) tutoring provides one-on-one or gorup tutoring for students K-12 enrolled in our program. Students may come in on their own or are selected in consultation with teachers. In our ASP, a student may receive help in the areas of math, science, reading, and writing from our qualified tutors.

Career Exploration

The Indian Education Program arranges field trips for interested high school students to attend the annual Native American Student Day at the UW and Muckleshoot Student Day in Auburn, both of which are for students interested in post-secondary education. Students also participate in the "Northwest Indian Youth Conference" in collaboration with IWASIL Boys and Girls Club, specializing in serving Native Youth in the greater Seattle/King County area. Information about Financial Aid for post-secondary education is sent to all high school juniors and seniors enrolled in our program.

Reference Materials

Teachers, parents and students may check out books, audio-visual materials and artwork. Seniors working on senior projects may call the Indian Education Office to reserve needed materials.

The Indian Education Program provides resources and expertise for all district staff concerning accurate information and materials for teaching about Indian heritage as well as techniques for recognizing and addressing bias and stereotypes in materials or in student behavior. Students and parents encountering any bias or with concerns about the curriculum may contact the Indian Education Office for assistance.

Parent Participation & Advocacy

Parent, grandparent, family, and guardian involvement is a major goal of the program and a great deal of effort is directed at improving conditions for the Indian student. The parents recognize the need for their support in assisting students to meet the goals of the program. Parents are encouraged to call if help or referral is needed to ensure their children's success in school.

Parent Advisory Committee

The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is a strong and very supportive aspect of the program. Members meet to discuss and support program activities and to plan special activities such as the Edmonds Community College Powwow, cultural potlucks, Expanding Your Horizons for middle school girls, Spirit Walk for Seattle Indian Health Board, and fundraising events. We are especially proud an make a point of recognizing graduation for our Indian students.

Eligibility Requirements:

American Indian and Alaskan Native Children attending an elementary, middle or senior high school in the Edmonds School District may enroll in the Indian Education Program.

Download the Title Vll Student Eligibility Certification form to enroll your child in our program. There is no cost or fee to you and your family to participate in the program; however, we must have this form on file to provide services for your child.  The main information we need is:

  1. Student name,
  2. Name of tribe,
  3. Name of tribal member (child himself/herself, child's natural parent or natural grandparent),
  4. Parent or guardian date and signature.

If you can provide this information please sign and return the Title Vll Student Eligibility Certification Form to the Indian Education Program at the Edmonds Service Center(ESC) building.  If you are unable to prove heritage, or you are researching eligibility, please call Gail T. Morris and I can help you.  Your student’s private information will be protected, we do not give out any information concerning your child’s tribal affiliation, grades, or school to anyone, nor do we share information with any other program without asking you first.

If you have any questions about completing this form or about the Indian Education Program, please call Ms. Morris at (425) 431-7133. I will be contacting you as soon as I get your paperwork.

IWASIL Boys and Girls Club

(Free Membership)

IWASIL has recently partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of King County to create the first "urban" Indian Boys and Girls Club in the nation. IWASIL offers recreational, cultural and leadership opportunities for Native Youth.

IWASIL is honored to support youth and families of the Edmonds School District. We hope collaboration with these activities will result in a stronger youth network and create team unity amongst our future Indian leaders in our communities.  If you have any questions contact Janine Tillotson at 206-325-3942.
