Cultural Activities
The Indian Education Program plans several cultural activities
throughout the year, open to all students in the program and their
families. Speakers, storytellers, dancers, drummers, craftspeople, and
Two Birdz Youth Powwow Singers & Dancers share their skill and
experiences with our students each month. Students and their families
also participate in field trips and regional cultural events to engage
their knowledge and appreciation of their Indian traditions and
heritage. Newsletters are mailed to students and families that list
cultural activities, events, exhibits, and powwows in the Pacific
Northwest.
Mondays 530p to 730p at the Homeschool Resource Center Rm 40;
Indian Education Program Room. 23200 100th Avenue W in Edmonds

Career Exploration
The
Indian Education Program arranges field trips for interested high
school students to attend the annual Native American Student Day at the
UW and Muckleshoot Student Day in Auburn, both of which are for
students interested in post-secondary education. Students also
participate in the "Northwest Indian Youth Conference" in collaboration
with IWASIL Boys and Girls Club, specializing in serving Native Youth
in the greater Seattle/King County area. Information about Financial
Aid for post-secondary education is sent to all high school juniors and
seniors enrolled in our program.
Reference Materials
Teachers, parents and students may check out books, audio-visual materials and artwork.
Students who are working on a Native American paper may call or email Gail Morris for assistance or ideas. Seniors working on senior projects
may call the Indian Education Office to reserve needed materials.
The Indian Education Program provides resources and expertise for all
district staff concerning accurate information and materials for teaching about
Indian heritage as well as techniques for recognizing and addressing bias and
stereotypes in materials or in student behavior. Students and parents
encountering any bias or with concerns about the curriculum may contact the
Indian Education Office for assistance.
Parent Participation & Advocacy
Parent,
grandparent, family, and guardian involvement is a major goal of the
program and a great deal of effort is directed at improving conditions
for the Indian student. The parents recognize the need for their
support in assisting students to meet the goals of the program. Parents
are encouraged to call if help or referral is needed to ensure their
children's success in school.
Parent Advisory Committee
The
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is a strong and very supportive aspect
of the program. Members meet to discuss and support program activities
and to plan special activities such as the Edmonds Community College
Powwow, cultural potlucks, Expanding Your Horizons
for middle school girls, Spirit Walk for Seattle Indian Health Board, and fundraising events. We are especially proud and make a point
of recognizing graduation for our Indian students.
