Early Entrance into Kindergarten or First Grade

Early Entrance into Kindergarten or First Grade (Pursuant to WAC 392-335- 010)

Per the state of Washington, a child must be 5 years of age as of midnight August 31 of the year of entry to be entitled to enter kindergarten. However, as outlined by Edmonds School District School Board policy and procedure 8135 & 8135 R1 children who turn 5 (Kindergarten) or 6 (First Grade) years of age between September 1 and December 31, 2018 may qualify for entry after successfully completing an assessment to evaluate school readiness.

Evaluations will be administered by District staff* during a two-day process. Candidates must successfully pass both the screening (Day 1) and evaluation (Day 2) in order to be eligible for early entrance. Scores needed to pass both the screening and evaluation should reflect above average 4 year old scores that are consistent with an average 5 year old. Children who do not
pass the Day 1 screening will not be invited back for the Day 2 evaluation.

To offset costs associated with the screening parents will be charged a fee of $250 for students who qualify to participate in Day 2 of the process (a reduced fee of $25 will be charged to families with incomes at the reduced lunch level/$0 for those who qualify at the free lunch level). Fees will be collected after the child successfully passes Day 1.

*Results from private psychologists will no longer be accepted.
