Spruce News May 2013

Dear Families,

VOLUNTEER RECEPTION:  Here at Spruce we love our volunteers!  To honor you and thank you we invite you to attend a breakfast in your honor.  Please join us on May 23rd from 8:30-9:00 in the library.  Hope you can join us!

3RD GRADE SWIM VOUCHERS: Reminder…..All 3rd graders received vouchers for 3 sessions of free swimming lessons in the fall.  Each voucher is good for one full session of lessons at any of our local pools.  The vouchers are good through August, 2013 and are funded through the Verdant Foundation. Information is also available on the ESD website under the “Community/Community Health Programs” tab at http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/Page/964.

FIFTH GRADE FAMILIES: Our fifth graders will present an evening music program here at Spruce on Tuesday, May 21, at 7:00pm.  All the students will have a part and we hope they can all participate!  The students are working very hard on this and are excited to share their skills. We know this will be an enjoyable program for everyone and look forward to seeing you there!

PLEASE HELP!  As we plan for next year, it’s important to have an accurate student count.  Your student(s) should have brought home a half-sheet flyer for parents to complete. Please take just a minute to complete the form and return it to school by Friday, May 10.  Thank you!

STUDENT PLACEMENT  In late May, teachers will begin the process of placing students in classes for next year.  While we do not accept requests for specific teachers, you are welcome to send me a note with information about your student’s learning style that might be helpful as we create classes.

SAVE THE DATE!  Open House this year is June 6, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.  Plan now to join us at this popular event during which students share some of the amazing work they’ve done this year.  All classrooms will be open and families are invited to visit any classrooms including the grade level your child will be in next fall!

CLOTHING: The health room lends clothes to children in necessary situations.  A lot of clothing has been lent out and little has been returned.  Please, if you have items at home, wash and return them to the office.  Thank you in advance!

DON’T FORGET ABOUT MEDICATIONS……June is coming and all medications need to be picked up from the office no later than Friday, June 21st. Any medications remaining will be discarded.

Enjoy this beautiful spring month!  Thanks for helping your child keep a focus on learning right up to the end of the school year!

Parenting may be one of the most difficult but also one of the most rewarding jobs you’ll have.  While there is no “perfect” way to parent to ensure our kids become happy, healthy and productive citizens, there are nine things you can do to foster this growth:

1.       Create a supportive, caring family.

2.       Maintain open, honest communication.

3.       Connect your kids with other caring, responsible adults.

4.       Get involved in your kids’ activities and at school.

5.       Give your student responsibilities at home.

6.       Keep your child safe.

7.       Set boundaries and high expectations.

8.       Get to know your kids’ friends.

9.       Be a positive role model.

Dear Spruce Families,

With the weather turning warm and schedules filling up, it’s hard to take time for another meeting, but I want to personally invite you to our PTA meeting, Thursday, May 9 at 7:00pm in the library. It’s our most important meeting of the year! We have lots to do, and we need your input to make our events even better and provide the best possible school environment for our children. We’ll plan next year’s events, discuss how PTA funds will be spent, and elect new leadership for 2013-2014. If you are a PTA  member,  we need your vote! If not, we need your fresh ideas and opinions! Do you have an idea for an event? Want to meet the new board? Ever wonder what we do with the money we raise? Just want to see what goes on at a PTA meeting? Join us May 9th! We'll see you there, and thank you for your support of Spruce PTA.
