Alderwood Middle School Counselors:

Middle school can be an exciting but challenging time! During middle school, students face some major milestones in development as they move towards independence and become more aware of who they are and the world that they live in. Academically, middle school requires that students take on more responsibility for their own learning. When physical, emotional, social, and cognitive changes occur simultaneously, it can be a lot to handle!

 What We Do:

School counselors are uniquely trained to support the academic, personal/social, and career development of all students. This is done through a developmental and comprehensive program that includes:
  • School Guidance Curriculum: Structured lessons designed to help students acquire knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level.
  • Individual Student Planning: Ongoing activities to help students establish personal goals and develop future plans.

  • Responsive Services: Prevention/Intervention activities to meet students' immediate and future needs.

  • System Support: Establishing, maintaining, and enhancing the school counseling program.
(Examples of activities and competencies in each area can be found here.)

These program aspects are in line with the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) National Model for best practices. For more information on school counselor roles or the competencies we teach students, please visit the following resources:
