Elementary School Change Information

NOTE: If you are moving to a new service area that belongs to your address, a School Change Application is not needed. Simply go to that school to register directly.

Elementary schools in the Edmonds School District are closed to School Change enrollment for the 2018-19 school year. The majority of our elementary schools have exceeded building capacity. Additionally, we do not have the capacity in individual programs, grade levels, or classrooms at all of our schools to accommodate students who do not reside in a school’s geographic areas. Except for the instances below, we will not be able to approve your School Change Application.

Students previously approved for a change of schools may remain there through 6th grade unless there is a change to district attendance boundaries.

To parents with daycare concerns: While we realize that changing daycares may be difficult, we encourage parents with a daycare situation that will not work with their geographically assigned school to begin looking at other options.

There are a few instances where a change of schools may be approved. Parents of students as described below must complete a 2018-19 P-138, School Change Application (click here: P-138 School Change App 18-19) and submit it to the District office for approval:

  • As required by the state of Washington, children of eligible full time employees of the Edmonds School District
  • Approved if there is space is available at the time the request was submitted:
    • Siblings of:
      • Previously approved School Change students. The current School Change must also attend the transfer school in 2018-19.
      • Students who are/will be enrolled in a Challenge, Consolidated Health, or a special education self-contained classroom within the District
      • Students who were grandfathered into a school as a result of a District-mandated boundary change
    • Students who are completing their 5th grade year in 2017-18, and wish to stay for 6th grade at their current school (conditional pending review of attendance and discipline history of the student).
  • Students currently enrolled in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade who have moved during the 2017-18 school year may also apply for School Change.
    • These requests will be on hold until June 1 until the school has had a chance to review student projections for 2018-19, staffing allocations, as well as the attendance and discipline history of the student(s) requesting a transfer. A final decision to approve or deny these requests will be made at that time.
    • Requests received after June 1 will be considered on a case by case basis
    • Registration season begins on February 28, 2018, and parents are encouraged to enroll at the new school as soon as possible after the move occurs as there is no guarantee of continued enrollment once a family moves
    • Students who move between the last day of school in June 2018 and August 15, 2018 need to submit a School Change application to see if there is space for the student to remain at their current school through 6th grade. There is no guarantee of placement.

If you feel your situation fits one of the scenarios outlined above, complete form #P-138, School Change Application 2018-19  shown above and submit your application to the Edmonds School District:

Important Notes:

  • If approved for a change of schools, parents are responsible for transportation to and from the new school
  • this process does not apply to Madrona K-8, Maplewood K-8, or Edmonds Heights K-12. Please contact these schools directly for their entry guidelines.
  • Students who are accepted to change schools may continue to attend that school without reapplying for future years unless District attendance boundaries are changed. If a boundary change is needed, procedures will be created to address School Change students at the school(s) affected by the change.
  • if the student wishes to continue at the middle/high school level in the attendance area of the approved elementary school, they must apply for a School Change and be approved to the next grade level. Without an approved School Change, students are expected to attend their neighborhood middle/high school.
  • Parents of out-of-district students will be contacted prior to final approval to obtain a Choice Transfer Request (CTR) from their resident school district. The CTR will be required to the beginning of each school year that the student is enrolled in the Edmonds School District. Failure to submit a yearly CTR may result in the withdrawal of your child from the Edmonds School District.
  • Students may be asked to return to their neighborhood school if there are issues with attendance, discipline, tardiness, or late pick-up from the approved school

What if your School Change Application is denied? A parent receiving a District letter of denial has ten (10) school days after receipt to submit an appeal outlining special hardship circumstances to:
