7390 R1 - Procedures for Management of Concussion and Head Injury in Interscholastic Athletics

Annually, the district will distribute head injury and concussion information sheet to all parents and/or guardian and student participants involved in competitive sport activities. All coaches, including volunteers, will complete concussion management training as required below and will comply with the WIAA guidelines for the management of head injuries and concussions.

Coaches

-Paid or volunteer coaches are required to receive annual training prior to the first practice or competition in the nature and risk of concussion or head injury. This training shall include signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury including continuing to play after a concussion/brain injury. Trainings will be available via sports specific WIAA online rules clinics or provided by District athletic trainers.

-Coaches shall remove any athlete showing signs or symptoms or suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury immediately from participation and will not allow the student to return to play until he/she has written clearance from a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussion/brain injury.

-Coaches shall annually educate their athletes on the signs and symptoms of concussion and encourage athletes to notify a coach if they or a teammate exhibits those signs or symptoms.

Parents and Athletes

-Athletes and parents shall annually review a concussion and head injury information sheet on the signs and symptoms of concussion. Both parents and athletes shall sign the document contained in the Athletic Forms packet or a concussion training sign-in sheet verifying they have read the signs and symptoms of a concussion prior to the student athlete initiating practice or competition.

-Athletes will notify a coach if a teammate exhibits signs or symptoms of a concussion or head injury.

Private Non-Profit Youth Sports Groups

-Private non-profit youth sports groups must follow this policy and the above procedures. Prior to accessing school facilities, non-profit youth sports representative must sign a compliance statement verifying that their coaches, parents and athletes have complied with this district policy.
