Edmonds School
District
Starting in the Fall of 2004, Classrooms will receive a document presenter (Avervision 300) and a projector (Hitachi). Schools will begin receiving computers in the spring of 2005 and continue through the next school year.

The levy is providing a District layer of support for schools. As a rule, schools will choose a platform (Mac or PC) and set up dates to roll out the equipment provided by the levy. Task Forces have determined the basic level of equipment for each instructional space:
. Computer
. Projector
. Document Presenter
List of Questions, links to responses:

Who receives a levy funded laptop?

All certificated staff who work for the district .4 FTE or more.

What if I work less than .4 FTE?

If your contract is for less than .4 FTE you will not be issued a laptop. Your school should provide you with access to a computer (possibly desktop) while you are at work.

Why don't teachers working less than .4 FTE receive a laptop?

While we recognize that all employees need to have access to technology to perform their jobs, the amount of levy funds we received require us to limit who receives which type of equipment. We have stretched that budget as far as possible to allow part-time teachers who are more than .4 FTE to receive laptops.

Are there any exceptions?

We have a few "spare" laptops that may be checked out on a yearly basis. You may request an application by e-mailing Kim Mathey at matheyk@edmonds.wednet.edu. Approval will be based on a short application, principal recommendation, and laptop availability.

What happens if a piece of equipment breaks due to user error, misuse, or neglect?

As with the warranty on any item, it only covers a defect with the machine, not operator error. If a projector, laptop, or document presenter gets dropped, or is mistreated in any way, the company may not honor the warranty. Please treat your equipment with care! Educate staff and students about proper use, handling...!
Whether the cause is from defect or misuse, the repair process will be the same.

Hitachi projector:

  • We have a 4 year warranty on projectors
  • There is a 24-hour turn around for a loaner replacement from Hitachi
  • Broken Projector Procedure
    1.  Teacher reports problem to building tech. contact person.
    2.  Building tech. person check the projector to see if it is truly a broken projector or just needs an easy fix (unplugged cord, lens cap on, wrong input, etc.).
    3.  If broken, building tech. person calls the district Tech Dept. at x7333.
    4.  Tech Dept. orders a loaner projector and starts paperwork to repair the broken one.
    5.  Building packs up broken projector in the original packing materials & ship it off to the repair facility.
    6.  Hitachi pays to ship the repaired projector back to school.
    7.  Once you have received the repaired projector, return the loaner projector to its box using the prepaid shipping label provided.
    Avervision:
  • We have a 3 year warranty on document presenters
  • Broken Document Presenter Procedure
    1.  Teacher reports problem to building tech. contact person.
    2.  Building tech. person check the projector to see if it is truly a broken projector or just needs an easy fix (unplugged cord, lens cap on, wrong input, etc.).
    3.  If broken, building tech. person calls the district Tech Dept. at x7333.
    4.  Tech Dept. will give you directions to get a loaner presenter and have yours fixed.

    Basic Equipment Exceptions

    PE

Due to the unique needs of teaching in a large space, each PE program will be issued enhanced equipment for their Classroom Tech Station. This set up includes:
    . Avervision Document presenter
. More powerful projector (to be determined)
. Sound System (to be determined)
. Cart to safely house the equipment and make it easy to move

This equipment is meant to support the PE program during instructional time. It may be "checked out" from the PE department for large events such as assemblies and after school gatherings as this set up is meant for large space use.

The 4 larger High Schools will receive 2 sets of the higher end equipment. This will support both gym spaces in the high school and meet the needs of a large school. Scriber Lake HS will receive 1 set of the same equipment.

Since middle schools will receive one set of the above equipment, (but the gym is typically split and shared,) the program will receive a second Avervision document presenter and a Hitachi projector (same as regular classrooms.) This equipment is for the PE program.

Elementary PE teachers will receive one set of the higher end equipment for their program. This equipment may be "checked out" from the PE teacher for large events such as assemblies.

When PE teachers are teaching in regular classroom spaces, a document presenter and projector should be available in that classroom.

To complete support from the PEP grant, the levy will ensure that each PE teacher (.4 and above) has access to a laptop for their program. (Currently, teachers share laptops if there is more than 1 PE teacher in a building).

    Timeline:
    Document Presenter and Projector
We are still in the process of determining the exact model... of projector, sound system, and cart. We will put out a bid for this equipment and hope to have it delivered to schools during the winter trimester.

If PE programs have access to a projector already, the program may request to have the document presenter delivered with their school wave (or now if the school has already received equipment.) The rest of the equipment will follow.

    Laptops
We are still in the bid process for laptops. Laptops will be rolled out in waves to teachers during the spring '05 and throughout the following school year.

    Feedback
PE Teachers have the following opportunities to review this plan and make recommendations for equipment specs.
. During Elementary PE meeting on 10/26 at Woodway Elementary
. Secondary PE meeting on Nov 1, from 3-4PM, at ESC Room 104
             1 teacher rep/school, please!

Will I get a table or cart to set the Classroom Tech Station up on?

We would have liked to be able to provide furniture for the Classroom Tech Station. TAC examined this possibility. Rather than sacrifice quality by purchasing lower end tech tools or by not putting tools into every classroom, we decided it was better to forgo the furniture in this phase. Each teacher has different needs in a table or cart - height, size, does it need to roll or be stationary...

In order to support schools in finding the best furniture for their needs, we are collecting examples of CTS from schools now, and posting some of these on our website. Along with this, we have posted some recommendations of furniture that schools might want to purchase. Please visit http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/capitallevy/technology/staff/ctsfurniture.htm for suggestions.

When will schools get the Building Based Allocations? How much money will this be?

Beginning in the 2005-06 school year, each school will receive $5/student of levy funds to supplement the tools provided by the levy. This will enable schools to address needs specific to their building. This funding will continue for 2 school years.

    return to top

How were the CTS tools selected?

A number of focus groups at various grade levels examined their curriculum and identified areas of need to enhance student learning. Teachers across the board saw a need to explain concepts and ideas using visual tools during presentations. We had experience with the success of document cameras with a small group of TLP (Teacher Leadership Project) and No Limits! teachers in our district. From Kindergarten on up, teachers who had used document presenters could share story after story of how all students in their classrooms could grasp concepts and ideas in a shorter amount of time using this tool.

We began a pilot project in the Spring of 04. Twenty-one of our schools received a document presenter and were asked to share this around with many teachers in their building. Feedback from this pilot was overwhelmingly positive. Teachers continued to support this implementation of the levy. The only negative feedback was on the quality of the document presenter schools received for the grant.

Once we identified the tools as necessary to instruction, the steps were taken to begin selecting equipment.

    1. Vendor Fair held in June allowing teachers to evaluate the various document presenters and projectors

    • Teachers clearly select the Avervision 300 as their top document presenter. Feedback shows that color, clarity, focus, and zoom are critical to classroom use.
    • Projector feedback is mixed, with no clear "winner." Teachers identify the following attributes as critical to classroom use however:
      . Clarity
      . Brightness
. Throw distance (how far the projector has to be from the screen to project a large image
. Loudness of the projector (can you hear student responses over the fan)

    2. Selection Committee comprised of Technology Advisory Committee members, Tech Dept., Instructional Media Depart.
    • Evaluated a number of projectors with the Avervision 300 to test the performance of the projectors.
    • Designed specs (attributes) needed in a projector and sent out a request for bids from vendors
    3. Received bids from 8 vendors
    • Reviewed the bids for price, service, warranty, and specs
    4. Selection Committee tested top rated equipment again, according to specs previously identified
    • The Hitachi CPS 235W fits within our budget and meets all the specs
    • 1600 lumens
    • Lamp life of 3000 hours
    • 4 year warranty
    • Has coupons for spare bulbs (to be held centrally and distributed on an "as needed" basis
