26 Schools Receive Tech Levy Tools

We have completed Wave 1 and 1.5 for the Classroom Tech Station roll-out. This phase includes a document presenter and projector for classrooms. (See Computers article below) The Trainers trainings for Wave 2 and 3 will be held in January, with the school roll-outs being scheduled for February and March.

Feedback from teachers has been wonderful. We collected quotes during a short contest that we ran in November.  From this we have collected examples of how the tools are helping students learn. Students submitted poetry, letters, and artwork about the tools. Some of these will be published in the next issue of the Edmonds School District News.

Furniture Issues

The Classroom Tech Stations are great, but teachers are having a difficult time finding the appropriate furniture to set it on. We are currently working with the fire departments to assess whether we should purchase carts for all Classroom Tech StationsWe will be asking each school to fill out a short survey regarding this issue. Be looking for the survey the first week back from the break Please hold off on purchasing furniture for now

Projector Filter Error Messages

If you are getting filter error messages on your projector, be sure to follow the procedures at: http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/capitallevy/technology/staff/hitachifilter.htm. Basically, you will need to reset the filter time on the projector. The web link will give you step by step directions.

Wireless Schools-What's Happening?

The Technology Dept is working with the Everett School District and a network consultant, NIS, to test Cisco and Airespace wireless technology solutions.  Currently, they are doing some limited testing at Alderwood Middle and Meadowdale Elementary.

Once these tests are completed, we will be contracting with a vendor to do site surveys to estimate quantity and placement of wireless access points.  This will be followed with a Request for Proposals from vendors.

Wireless LANs require a wired LAN to complement it.  Therefore, we have completed an assessment of the cabling infrastructure at all of our school sites.  Seven schools have been identified as being "high priority" sites requiring immediate attention.  Those schools are: Cedar Way Elementary, Edmonds Elementary, Hazelwood Elementary, Lynnwood Intermediate, Martha Lake Elementary, Lynnwood High and Mountlake Terrace High.  The Technology Dept. is working with Capital Projects Office to develop a project timetable for when this work will be completed.

The Document Presenters are Great... but when are the computers coming?

We held a vendor fair this fall so staff would have an opportunity to test out various computers; laptops and desktops. We gathered feedback from this fair and will be writing the Request for Proposal (bid) so we can decide which model of PC and Mac we will be ordering. Once we get the proposals back, we will have a focus group of teachers and school tech people help us select the best model for our schools.

Most schools will be receiving a laptop for each teacher as part of the Classroom Tech Station. This instructional station will help as teachers work with groups of students. We are working with the high schools to decide if a laptop or desktop model works best in their environment where teachers move between several instructional spaces. We will be asking for this information in the spring.

The computers will not begin to roll-out to whole schools until next school year. This will give us plenty of time to have the computers customized to our specifications, get the necessary network upgrades completed, and train school staff who will help with the roll-outs. Schools should  consider this roll-out as they work on next year's SIP plans.

We will be providing much more information in the next few months. In the spring, we will be asking schools for their platform preference (Mac or PC) and confirming that the laptop model is right for them.

We are building an extensive Question and Answer section for common questions about the levy roll-out. You can access it at: http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/capitallevy/technology/qanda/qanda.htm#3.

The Basics:

Laptops will be rolled out by school. Each classroom teacher (.4 FTE and above) will  receive a computer for the Classroom Tech Station. If a teacher has an up-to-date laptop, that teacher is advised to wait until later in the levy to replace it. (Computers get better all the time.)
The Levy Team will determine the roll-out schedule for schools, based on needs assessment, proximity of schools, network upgrades and other timing issues. We will work with the schools to find a date that works within a range.
An Out of Box training model will be used. This is still in the design phase. More information coming shortly.
A couple teachers from each school will be asked to attend training early to receive equipment. These teachers will be the active leaders during the school roll out by assisting with the Out of Box trainings, participating in developing the school professional development plan, and helping to orchestrate professional development opportunities for staff.
