Subject: Levy update

School Tech Point People:

Please share this update on what is happening with the Instructional Technology Levy implementation with your building implementation teams and other staff.

This e-mail covers the following topics:
Accomplishments
19 Schools in Wave 1
Next Steps

Accomplishments!
We have selected the first round of instructional levy tools for classrooms!
Classroom Tech Station Tools:
· Avervision 300 Document Presenter Hitachi CPS235W

(Computer selection has not been made at this time.)

How did we select these tools?
A number of steps were taken.

1. Vendor Fair held in June allowing teachers to evaluate the various document presenters and projectors
· Teachers clearly select the Avervision 300 as their top document presenter. Feedback shows that color, clarity, focus, and zoom are critical to classroom use.
· Projector feedback is mixed, with no clear "winner." Teachers identify the following attributes as critical to classroom use however:
· Clarity
· Brightness
· Throw distance (how far the projector has to be from the screen to project a large image
· Loudness of the projector (can you hear student responses over the fan)

2. Selection Committee comprised of Technology Advisory Committee members, Tech Dept., Instructional Media Depart.
· Evaluated a number of projectors with the Avervision 300 to test the performance of the projectors.
· Designed specs (attributes) needed in a projector and sent out a request for bids from vendors

3. Received bids from 8 vendors
· Reviewed the bids for price, service, warranty, and specs

4. Selection Committee tested top rated equipment again, according to specs previously identified
· The Hitachi CPS 235W fits within our budget and meets all the specs
· 1600 lumens
· Lamp life of 3000 hours
· 4 year warranty
· Has coupons for spare bulbs (to be held centrally and distributed on an "as needed" basis

19 Schools signed up for Wave 1: September - November installation of presenters and projectors
AMS, BTMS, CW, CPM, CV, EHSRC, EG, HW, HT, MW K-8, MDHS, MDM, MTE, OH, SLHS, SW, SP, WG, WW
(Remember: At least 50% of your staff agreed to receive and use equipment this fall)

If you are one of the 19 schools
· You will be notified shortly of the Train the Trainer dates for "Out of the Box Night" training at your school
We will ask you to select 1-2 staff members to attend the training so they can receive their equipment to practice on and deliver training back at their building. Please keep checking our website at: http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/capitallevy/technology/staff/classtechres.html for more information

If you are not one of the 19 schools
· You received an e-mail from Cynthia Nelson at the end of the school year, asking to sign up for a Wave by date. You need to submit the requested information so we can order the correct number of items for your school
o Submit information by:
October 29th to be included in the Dec. - Feb. Wave
January 31st to be included in the Spring Wave
o If you cannot locate the information needed, please e-mail Cynthia Nelson (nelsonc@edmonds.wednet.edu)

Next Steps.
A number of things will happen now.
· We will take our selection to the School Board for approval on August 10th . The order for 500 projectors and document cameras will be placed after approval. We expect about a 2-3 week turn around time for delivery.
· Two TAC Retreats will be held in August to discuss implementation decisions
o Support for schools choosing platforms
o Protocol for "exceptions"
o Process for determining the exact computer models that we will be purchasing later this year
o Part-time teachers or teachers who share positions
o Implementation of the levy - professional development and tech support

Later in August.
· Schools receive info for the "Choose Your Platform" phase - identifying whether you will be a Mac school or a PC school
o All computers will come with:
§ CD burners/DVD Players
§ Wireless ability
§ MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
§ Inspiration or Kidspiration, depending on the grade level

In September.
· High Schools will meet to decide if their staff is best served with laptops or desktop computers
o (Elementary schools and middle schools will receive laptops for the Classroom Tech Station component.)

We will be sending e-mails and posting information regularly at our new Instructional Technology Levy website:

Please let us know if you or your building staff have any questions. We are looking forward to working with you this next school year.
