Classroom amplification systems enhance children’s ability to learn by allowing every child in a classroom to hear clearly all the speech components of the teacher’s voice, no matter where a child is seated or where the teacher is standing. Recent studies confirm that using classroom amplification systems result in significantly higher academic and student achievement scores. Classroom amplification systems are now recognized as one of the most powerful and cost effective tools for improving student listening and learning. Due to auditory processing development, it is recommended that students in grades K-5 and ELL students have regular access to this tool.

Interactive whiteboards enhance the teaching and learning process and eliminate common problems with presentations. The touch-sensitive display connects to a computer and digital projector to show the computer image. The presenter can then control computer applications directly from the display, write notes in digital ink and save work to share later.
Interactive whiteboards allow teachers to record their instruction and post the material for review by students at a later time. This can be a very effective instructional strategy for students who benefit from repetition, who need to see the material presented again, for students who are absent from school, for struggling learners, and for review for examinations. This can help transform learning and instruction.

A student response system can enhance the classroom experience by providing teachers an electronic way of interacting with students. Through small remote devices (" clickers"), teachers can poll their students, ensure key learning points are being absorbed, take attendance, or give low-stakes quizzes. Unlike asking students to raise their hands in response to a question, the teacher can receive immediate feedback from all students in the class while ensuring a student's public anonymity.

FAQ’s

When will we receive our package?

We will announce an implementation schedule in June. For packages that require installation (SmartBoard and Sound Systems, we will work to get these installed over the summer or early fall.) Training will be provided at the beginning of the '07 school year.

What type of training is available?

Training dates will be set for the fall of 2007. Any teachers who wish to be involved may participate in the training. Amount of training will depend on the tool chosen.

  • Sound Enhancement : One 1.5 hour session, plus a quick follow up.
  • SmartBoard: Two 2 hour sessions plus several optional follow-ups.
  • Clickers: Two 2 hour sessions plus one optional follow-up

The cost for in-service pay for up to 2 teachers/building will be covered by the district. Schools may cover the costs for additional staff to attend any of the sessions.

The principal is asked to attend one of the initial sessions as well.

What will this cost my school?

The ’04 levy will pay for the cost to purchase and install (if necessary) one set of the pilot tools. The school will need to identify which classroom the SmartBoard or the Sound System should be installed in. Costs to move the equipment at a later date will be incurred by the building.

What type of support is available?

Since we are testing these tools out, we will want to work closely with your teachers to make sure that all the equipment is reliable and easy to use. The IMD coordinators and the tech support staff will work together to provide the necessary support.

What commitments does the school make?

This is a pilot project, which means that we need feedback on the value, reliability, and ease of use of the tools. We expect that:

  • Each school has a teacher or team of teachers who agree to use package with students
  • The principal agrees to use the tool in staff meetings, community events and/or with our PTA/PSO… (A teacher may demonstrate this at a meeting).
  • The school provides feedback to the IMD on the implementation, training and training materials, and instructional effectiveness of the tool via on-line surveys.

How do I find out more about each tool?

Please review the following websites.

Or contact one of the IMD coordinators to find out who’s using these tools in our district!
