Teachers and Students Use Technology to Enhance Learning

_____________________________________________________________

Over 250 classrooms have received Student Tech Tools this year. This project places technology tools directly into classrooms for student use. Approximately 120 more classrooms will receive tools in the 2008-2009 school year.

In addition to the Classroom Tech Station which provided a document camera, projector, and laptop for every classroom, Student Tech Tools provide additional computers, grade level appropriate software and other tools, depending on content area. These will allow students to have timely access to resources to help them investigate current issues and information to help them learn. Students will be able to work together to:

  • Develop information literacy skills
  • Research problems
  • Learn about the world
  • Enhance literacy and math skills
  • Communicate ideas to broader audiences
Teachers in the STT classrooms are piloting our new Edmonds School District Technology Standards for Students. In order to meet the national and state expectations that all 8th graders are competent at using technology, we have developed standards for student use of technology starting in Kindergarten. The goal is that students, even in elementary school, will access technology to meet Edmonds Learning Outcomes:
  • use information resourcefully
  • manage socially and personally
  • communicate effectively, and
  • think strategically.
To ensure that we create these powerful, engaging learning experiences, teachersl apply to receive these tools first. Selected teams of teachers receive 21 hours of professional development during the year and collaborate with each other to create strong lessons that greatly impact student learning. We greatly appreciate the support of our community and invite you to come into our schools to see what the excitement is all about.

This is an era of technology. It's where we live and work. It's where our children are growing up. As our homes and jobs change, so must our classrooms.

Due to the passage of our Capital Levy, we now have an opportunity to bring current technologies to our children and world-class resources to our classrooms. This levy gives our classrooms the opportunity to use technology as a powerful tool to better meet the higher standards expected by our community.
