Resources for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning
We must prepare all Edmonds School District students to live and work in the world of the future,
one of constant change and innovation. In Washington state, it is the goal for all students to know and be able to:
Read with comprehension, write with skill, and communicate effectively and responsibly.
Know and apply the core concepts and principles of mathematics; social, physical, and
life sciences; the arts; and health and fitness.
Think analytically, logically, and creatively, integrate experience and knowledge to form
reasoned judgments, and solve problems.
Understand the importance of work and how performance, effort, and decisions affect career and
educational opportunities.
Standards, which are statements of what students need to be able to do, are set by the state. Assessments, such
as the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), are in place to measure student learning toward these standards.
The WASL is not the only method to measure learning, however. There are district, school, and classroom assessments also
in place to provide an overall view of student learning.
To help families better prepare for and understand the WASL, the District has compiled a list of resources and
references that may be useful. Any specific questions about the WASL or assessments may best be directed to your child's classroom
teacher or principal. Nancy Katims, the District's director of assessment, research, and evaluation, can also be contacted
via email or by calling 425-431-7302.
