Early Entrance into Kindergarten or First Grade
Early entrance into kindergarten or first grade for the 2017-2018 school year may be possible for students who turn 5 or 6 years of age between September 1 and December 31, 2017.
An assessment by a psychologist licensed in the state of Washington is required for early entrance. To qualify, children who turn 5 or 6 years of age between:
*September 1 and October 31 must demonstrate above average ability in several assessment areas (scoring 115 or above in all areas evaluated)
*November 1 and December 31 may be considered for early entrance on a highly individual basis when exceptional intellectual ability requires a placement in kindergarten or first grade in order to meet individual needs (scoring 120 or above in all areas evaluated)
Parents are usually responsible for scheduling and paying for the assessment.
Please click on one of the links below for the Kindergarten or First Grade parent packet for the 2017-2018 school year. The packet contains contact information for psychologists as well as the form to complete if you think you qualify for a free district assessment. Only results submitted on the 2017-2018 testing form will be accepted. The parent must also complete the Early Entrance Application. The parent will give this application to the psychologist, who will submit it to the Edmonds School District with the testing results.
Parent Notification & Registration
You will receive notification from the district within 5 working days of receipt of assessment results authorizing conditional early entrance into kindergarten or first grade. After you receive the notification, you may go to your home school to register. Early entrance candidates must register before the first day of school in September.
Early entrance into kindergarten or first grade is conditional pending the successful completion of a 25 school day evaluation period. The school may decide at any time during this evaluation period if early entrance placement is appropriate for your child. The child must start school on the first day of school and is expected to attend all days for a full day.
First Grade Early Entrance
Parents of first grade early entrance candidates must also sign and return the First Grade Conditions letter (found in the parent packet). Additionally, testing may be waived and the student considered for early entrance into first grade regardless of the date of birth if s/he successfully completes the kindergarten year at an accredited private kindergarten, or the teacher has a valid Washington state teaching certificate. The school must complete and return the First Grade - Attended Private Kindergarten form also found in the parent packet.
